NFL Analysis Flags Patriots’ Gamble on Stefon Diggs–Here’s Why It’s a Risky Move

The New England Patriots’ decision to sign Stefon Diggs to a three-year, $63.5 million deal has drawn criticism, with analysts labeling it a high-risk gamble. While the move was aimed at revitalizing a lackluster receiving corps, concerns about Diggs’ age, injury history, and declining production have cast doubt on its potential success.

At 31 years old and coming off a torn ACL, Diggs enters the 2025 season facing significant uncertainty. Once a top-tier receiver, his production had already begun to wane before the injury, with a sharp decline in his yards per catch and overall impact in 2024. Critics argue that this trajectory makes the Patriots’ financial commitment questionable.

The Patriots, ranked near the bottom of the league in wide receiver depth, were clearly in need of a proven playmaker. While Diggs brings veteran leadership and name recognition, analysts point out that his explosiveness and reliability may no longer match his paycheck. This places added pressure on Diggs to perform at a level that justifies the investment.

Rookie quarterback Drake Maye could benefit from Diggs’ experience, providing a potential silver lining to the acquisition. However, relying on an aging receiver to anchor a rebuilding offense is a risky proposition. The Patriots’ gamble underscores their desperation to attract talent and support their young quarterback’s development.

NFL Analysis Claims New England Patriots’ Stefon Diggs Gamble is a Risky Move

New England’s decision to bet on Diggs presents a bigger risk than expected. This is detailed more in an analysis by Kristopher Knox for Bleacher Report.

However, the Patriots decision to sign Stefon Diggs to a three-year, $63.5 million deal and insert him into the No. 1 receiver role was questionable.

And no, his entry here has nothing to do with Diggs’ viral boat party video.

Picking Diggs to be the new No. 1 receiver was risky because A.) he’s 31 years old and has seen declining production in recent years and B.) he’s coming off of a torn ACL he suffered in late October.

New England had limited receiver options this offseason, but wideouts like Deebo Samuel and DK Metcalf were clearly available via trade.

Skeptics also note that New England’s receiving corps lacks depth beyond Diggs, further amplifying the risk. Even with his presence, the group remains unproven and inconsistent, leaving the Patriots with more questions than answers heading into the season.

As the 2025 season unfolds, Diggs’ performance will be closely scrutinized. Whether this gamble pays off or becomes a costly misstep will have significant implications for the Patriots’ future and their efforts to climb back into contention.
