Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes left late in the fourth quarter of the team’s 21-7 victory over the Cleveland Browns on Sunday. The Chiefs improved to 13-1 with the win, and have a two-game lead over the Buffalo Bills for the first seed in the AFC with three games remaining in the regular season.
The Chiefs will play two of their next three games by Christmas. Kansas City will host the Houston Texans at Arrowhead Stadium on Saturday before traveling to play the Pittsburgh Steelers on Christmas Day.
The Kansas City Chiefs could turn to Carson Wentz
It’s unclear when Mahomes will play again, and the team could be turning to veteran Carson Wentz to help Kansas City try and clinch a bye and home-field advantage for the playoffs with NFL MVP candidate Josh Allen and the Bills chasing the Chiefs.
Mahomes said Sunday he could have finished the game against the Browns if he had to go, but there were worries the two-time NFL MVP would have considerable swelling on Monday. The 29-year-old quarterback underwent testing on Monday.
Patrick Mahomes has a “mild” high-ankle sprain
Per the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, it was confirmed Mahomes has a mild high-ankle sprain and is week-to-week.
“Sources: Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes was diagnosed with a mild high-ankle sprain following tests, and he’s still considered week-to-week. Tests confirmed initial thoughts. The schedule is tough, with a Saturday game then a quick turnaround for Christmas,” Rapoport posted on X.

NFL fans reacted to Mahomes’ diagnosis on social media.
“Only mild? That’s the best news than what it could have been Wentz plays Saturday and beats Texans at Arrowhead Mahomes plays on Christmas in Pittsburgh with 10 days of rest and beats Steelers to clinch the 1 seed Will the Steelers even play their starters a full game if they beat Ravens on Sunday,” asked a fan.
“So many Bills fans saying he faked it or wishing he was seriously hurt,” posted another. “Pretty embarrassing to your fanbase, I know you are terrified of Mahomes but you should want to beat the Chiefs at full strength not because of injuries.”
“Feel bad for him,” wrote a fan.
“This feels like the 4th or 5th straight season he’s had this injury, only for it to not affect his play at all,” posted another.
“Mahomes and Allen play through all their injuries. Unstopable. I look forward to their next match up with both playing at their best. Respect for the Chiefs. Go Bills,” posted a fan.
“He doesnt need to play next 3 weeks. Sub in Wentz. If he wins 1 game they are still 14-3, 1st seed. Bye week. That gives Kermit 4 weeks off to recuperate. Then AFCCG. Another 2 weeks after for SB. He shud be good to go,” suggested a fan.
