As Patrick Mahomes was prepping to win another Super Bowl, his father found himself in some trouble that could cost him a whole lot.
On Wednesday, Patrick Mahomes Sr. was formally indicted on a felony drunk-driving charge after being arrested in Texas last month as his son and namesake was preparing to return to the Super Bowl with the Kansas City Chiefs.
The elder Mahomes was officially indicted in Smith County Texas on March 28, according to online court records, which list the charge as ‘Driving White Intoxicated 3rd or More IAT. Mahomes Sr. faces a potential 10-year sentence and up to a $10,000 fine. He was arrested by Tyler police on February 3, marking at least the third time he was picked up on a drunk-driving related charge.
Patrick Mahomes Sr. was previously sentenced to 40 days in jail in 2019 after one of his DUI offenses.
The Kansas City Chiefs star declined to discuss the arrest with reporters in Las Vegas in the days leading up to his second consecutive Super Bowl victory.
‘It’s a family matter, so I’ll keep it to the family,’ Mahomes told reporters on Super Bowl opening night. ‘That’s all I have to say.’
Patrick Mahomes Sr. Has History Of Trouble With The Law
Mahomes Sr. was found with an open can of beer in his car after being pulled over, according to police. He was then taken into custody after allegedly struggling several sobriety tests.
‘Based on the totality of the circumstances, “I believed Patrick was impaired to a perceptible degree while operating a motor vehicle in a public place,” the arresting officer wrote.
Mahomes Sr. was stopped because he was driving slower than the other cars around him in a vehicle with an expired registration, police claim.
Mahomes Sr. has faced multiple DWI charges in the past, in addition to a charge of public intoxication which came during a 2016 football game between TCU and Texas Tech, back when his son was playing for the Red Raiders, according to Bleacher Report.
Patrick Mahomes Sr. played 11 total seasons in the MLB from 1992 to 2003, pitching for the New York Mets, Boston Red Sox, Texas Rangers, Chicago Cubs and the Pittsburg Pirates.
He has three children: Patrick, 28, and Jackson Mahomes, 23, whom he shares with ex-wife Randi Martin, as well as daughter Zoe Mahomes, from a relationship with Anika Cooper following his divorce from Martin.
Jackson has faced his own legal troubles after being accused of sexual battery by a restaurant owner last May. Prosecutors dropped those charges in January when the alleged victim became reluctant to cooperate.
Jackson instead pleaded guilty to misdemeanor battery last month and was sentenced to six months’ probation.
This is obviously not the type of drama the Kansas City Chiefs superstar wants attached to him as he prepares to attempt to win three-straight Super Bowls.
