Michigan football did not have the season they envisioned after winning the national title in 2023. Following the loss of head coach Jim Harbaugh, quarterback J.J. McCarthy, rusher Blake Corum, and a bevy of starts from last year’s 15-0 team, Michigan attempted to run it back this season with a new group of playmakers. However, the Michigan Wolverines never caught their footing, struggling to protect their crown, going 7-5 and scoring a near FBS-worst 22.2 points per game. Michigan never figured out the quarterback position, with Alex Orji, Jack Tuttle, and Davis Warren throwing for ten touchdowns against 12 picks.
On Thursday, Orji darted for the transfer portal, ending his three-year run with the program. Michigan football routinely used Orji as a rushing threat from the backfield during his run. Still, he could never separate from the competition despite having a leg forward heading into this season. A six-foot-two, 230-pound dual-threat weapon, Michigan fans felt underwhelmed with Orji following his departure.
Michigan Football Fans Unmoved By Alex Orji Transfer
According to Hayes Fawcett of On3:
Breaking: Michigan QB Alex Orji plans to enter the Transfer Portal, he tells @on3sports.
The 6’3 235 QB appeared in 20 games for the Wolverines (3 starts).
Will have 2 years of eligibility remaining
On Friday, Michigan football dual-threat passer Alex Orji jumped for the transfer portal. A three-star recruit in the class of 2022, Orji committed to the Michigan Wolverines over Baylor, Houston, Kansas, Nebraska, TCU, Texas Tech, and Virginia Tech, among others. In his first two seasons, Orji attempted just one pass, completing it for five yards. However, he rushed 21 times for 123 yards and three touchdowns. This season, he made three starts while appearing in ten games. He went 23-of-44 for 148 yards and three touchdowns against one pick. He also rushed 53 times for 260 yards and a score.
With Orji completing just 53% of his passes this year, Michigan football turned to incumbent starter Davis Warren for much of this season. In the team’s epic regular-season finale win against rival Ohio State, Orji rushed thrice for 32 yards. Nevertheless, Michigan fans felt the Orji era with the Wolverines ended unceremoniously, sharing their thoughts via social media:
From preseason Heisman favorite to transfer portal. This must be the biggest downfall in sports history

Love his mentality but he needs to change positions.

Kinda figured this was coming. I wish the coaching staff tried him at other positions, he's to athletic to be on the bench all the time.

Whoever told him that he's a QB needs to re-evaluate their life choices.

Sad. Disgusted. And disappointed.
Can’t believe we just let a potential heisman winner go to the portal without any concern. Alex Orji was about to be the future of Michigan’s dynasty and we just let him go like he was bad or something. Very disappointed in our program. pic.twitter.com/lKnNhkU0q5
