The Oklahoma Sooners are heading into a critical season for head coach Brent Venables.
In three seasons with the Sooners, Venables has a 22-17 record, and if that doesn’t improve in year four, he might not be around to see 2026.
Last year was Oklahoma’s first year in the SEC, and they finished with a 6-7 record.

Venables will get an early taste of what his team will be like when they host Michigan in Week 2, and if he loses that game, it could put him on the hot seat.
Oklahoma Could Be Getting A New Head Coach In 2026

John Buhler from Fansided thinks Venables needs to get off to a good start, or he could be looking for a new job.
“I have the head coach of the other rival from the dormant Bedlam Series on this list as well. Brent Venables has made a boat load of money for not doing a whole helluva lot of winning at Oklahoma up to this point. The talent may be there in Norman, but the Sooners face the hardest schedule in the country. The only other comparable one is Florida, and we saw Billy Napier navigate his last season,” Buhler wrote. “Venables is entering his fourth year on the job at OU. While Oklahomans are on the verge of seeing their beloved Oklahoma City Thunder win their first NBA Finals to date, that is not going to excuse Venables from putting forth a third .500-caliber season in four years at the helm of the Sooners. This is a college football blue-blood we are talking about. The move to the SEC has knocked them down.”
Venables will have a tough second season in the SEC, and hopefully, the Sooners will secure a few more wins than they did last year.
