Oklahoma football had a disastrous season regarding injuries, most notably at wide receiver. At the beginning of the year, their top pass-catching option, Deion Burks, shined, snagging six receptions for 36 yards and three touchdowns in the team’s season opener against Temple. However, he played just four more games the rest of the season, dealing with a concussion and another undisclosed injury. Unlike Burks, wide receiver Jayden Gibson, a former four-star recruit who was eyeing an increased role in 2024, suffered a season-ending knee injury before the start of the team’s first year in the SEC. Oklahoma also received only a handful of plays from freshman standout wideout Nic Anderson as he dealt with a brutal hamstring injury.
Of Oklahoma football’s expected wideout contributors for the 2024 season, one of the few healthy options each week was former Texas Longhorns transfer Brenen Thompson. Thompson re-entered the transfer portal on Thursday and signed with Mississippi State on Friday. Former OU offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby leads Mississippi State. With Thompson becoming the latest transfer portal casualty, Oklahoma Sooners fans are at wit’s end with the program’s lack of stability.
Oklahoma Football Fans Irate With Transfer Portal
According to On3:
BREAKING: Oklahoma transfer WR Brenen Thompson has signed with Mississippi State, @PeteNakos_ has learned.
The former Texas signee was a 4-star in the 2022 class.
On Thursday, Oklahoma football lost Brenen Thompson to the transfer portal. Thompson finished top five on the team regarding receptions (19), receiving yards (230), and receiving touchdowns (2). He also spent 2023 with the Oklahoma Sooners, catching seven passes for 241 yards and two scores. He is formerly of the Texas Longhorns football program, catching just one pass in 2022 as a four-star recruit. Thompson will join 2023 OU play-caller Jeff Lebby at Mississippi State for the 2025 campaign, per On3.
Thompson became the latest Oklahoma football wide receiver to enter the transfer portal. Oklahoma has also lost wide receivers Jaquaize Pettaway, Nic Anderson, Andrel Anthony, Jalil Farooq, and JJ Hester. The Sooners have also lost quarterback Jackson Arnold, running backs Kalib Hicks and Chapman McKown, and tight end Bauer Sharp to the portal. With Oklahoma likely to play Navy in the Armed Forces Bowl down a war chest of offensive talent, fans are angry with the program’s current direction:
I mean, on one hand, no production is leaving.
On the other… what is going on behind closed doors?

I'm at the same point as Rene Russo in Tin Cup as Roy keeps swinging away "just knock it on, let her rip…I have lost it" from Tin Cup.

4 seasons, 2 total rebuilds. Dan Lanning in that same time has the number 1 team and constantly gets top transfers and recruits. Sorry, I mean this great and this is better than being a playoff team. We should be happy with this.

Not to be hyperbolic, but is the program actually dying?
— Matt (@MattMurph63) December 12, 2024
Feels like LR left again. Trust the system. All I’m seeing is players leaving this crap ain’t working. Have fun with 3-8 season and 0 sec wins with this crap show.
