Following a 10-3 season, Oklahoma football went a disappointing 6-7 this year, concluding with a heartbreaking 21-20 loss against the Navy Midshipmen in the Armed Forces Bowl. During a season with a laughable amount of injuries to the pass-catching core, Oklahoma Sooners star quarterbacks Jackson Arnold and Michael Hawkins Jr. labored, throwing for just 15 touchdowns against five interceptions across 13 games. Following the end of the regular season, Arnold darted for the transfer portal, landing with the Auburn Tigers.
Despite the presence of Hawkins, a dual-threat freshman quarterback who flashed playmaking ability this year, Oklahoma football perused the transfer portal with hopes of adding an elite-level signal-caller. OU eventually signed Washington State transfer quarterback John Mateer following an electric 2024 campaign. On Monday, On3 released their most influential transfer portal additions, headlined by Mateer to the Sooners.
Oklahoma Football’s John Mateer Earns Rave Review

According to Pete Nakos and On3:
Top 10 Most Impactful College Football Transfers, via @PeteNakos_
- John Mateer (OU)
- Justice Haynes (UM)
- Max Klare (OSU)
- Darian Mensah (Duke)
- Ahmad Hardy (Mizz)
- Kaidon Slater (COL)
- Quinten Joyner (TTU)
- Fernando Mendoza (IU)

- Patrick Payton (LSU)
Sitting atop Pete Nakos’ top transfers for the 2025 season is John Mateer, formerly of Washington State Cougars and now of Oklahoma football. Mateer sat behind superstar passer Cam Ward from 2022 to 2023 before the latter transferred to Miami. Mateer stepped into his shoes this season, leading WSU to an 8-5 record, throwing for 3,139 yards, 29 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. He completed 65% of his passes. He also ran for 826 yards and 15 touchdowns.
Mateer, a three-star recruit in the class of 2022, will head to Oklahoma for his senior year. Mateer will likely become the first transfer portal quarterback to start for Oklahoma football since Dillon Gabriel. In Gabriel’s final season with OU, the lefty threw for 3,660 yards and 30 touchdowns before leaving for the Oregon Ducks.
