The transfer portal has yet to do any favors for Oklahoma football this month. Alongside losing former five-star quarterback Jackson Arnold to the portal earlier in December, the team has already bid farewell to pass-catchers Nic Anderson, Jalil Farooq, JJ Hester, and Jaquaize Pettaway. On Wednesday, another wide receiver darted for the transfer portal, offensive playmaker Andrel Anthony.
Among the five wide receivers for Oklahoma football last season who missed a large chunk of the year, Anthony becomes the latest to depart Norman, Oklahoma. Anthony enters the portal a day after Farooq. With the move, the Oklahoma Sooners’ faithful took to social media in disgust regarding the program’s direction.
Oklahoma Football Fans Distraught Over Latest Portal Addition
According to Hayes Fawcett of On3:
Breaking: Oklahoma WR Andrel Anthony plans to enter the Transfer Portal, he tells @on3sports.
The 6’2 185 WR totaled 47 Receptions for 761 Yards & 5 TDs in his college career thus far. Started his career at Michigan.
The fifth Oklahoma football wide receiver to enter the transfer portal this month, Andrel Anthony, will join former teammates Nic Anderson, Jalil Farooq, JJ Hester, and Jaquaize Pettaway in finding a new home. Anthony missed all but one game this season with a knee injury that lingered throughout the year and ended with season-ending surgery. Anthony recorded 27 receptions for 429 yards and a touchdown the year prior. He played his first two seasons with the Michigan Wolverines, tallying 19 receptions for 328 yards and four scores.
Anthony becomes the latest Oklahoma Sooners wide receiver who had his season cut short to enter the transfer portal. Oklahoma will also be without starting quarterback Jackson Arnold, with the signal-caller jumping for the portal earlier this month. The mass exodus of offensive talent from Oklahoma has left their fans dumbfounded, with many blasting head coach Brent Venables via Twitter:
NIL needs to go to the NFL model, pay per game weekly during the season, same for bowl game. Performance based. Government will step in soon. Especially after Trump in office.

Don't want to bring your game up to the highest level transfer want to compete at the highest level stay.

Nic was legitimately hurt all season. The others were holding out

They should have to pay back their NIL. And if they refuse, take them to court. An embarrassment to the program

“What might have been…” the legacy of Brent venables. But let’s keep doubling down on “next year will be the year” I guess

Can’t wait to see which G5 WR replaces him!

So that’s now 3 out of the 5 that BV said all wanted to return. Interesting. Is Joe C ready to audit the training staff or nah?
Seriously, I thought we were telling HS receivers to go somewhere else because we were bringing everybody back. That’s 5 to portal, + 3 lost from HS

The transfer portal becoming the norm, is so embarrassing to humanity.
— DoopShow (@showdedoop) December 11, 2024
Injury riddled receivers and NIL Money plague every school now.
Can BV replace the dudes that didn’t really play? Some aren’t being retained! 🇺🇸— TallinTexas (@KragJones92963) December 11, 2024
Should be fun to replace these guys with dudes from the school of the blind and deaf that haven’t played in 2 years. Fun fun.
