An NFL fanbase is calling for the firing of their head coach, and with good reason. Los Angeles Chargers head coach Brandon Staley has been under fire almost his entire career as a head coach and after this week’s 41-38 loss to the Detroit Lions, Chargers fans are back at it calling for him to be fired. Staley has received a lot of criticism from not only fans but also well-known analysts and former head coaches.

Just broke my TV in front of 20 guests and my wife took our kids crying to spend the week at her mom’s house. How does Brandon Staley sleep at night? What did we do to deserve this? pic.twitter.com/0MxF5UXKCD

Brandon Staley feels comfort that we keep the games close against elite teams. You know what a real HC does? They beat those elite teams. It’s always them and never us pic.twitter.com/Bt7wf1Yknz

Staley is 23-20 as a head coach in the NFL, and many think that he has been the source of the problems with the Chargers. Many are saying that a team with the amount of talent the Chargers possess should not be struggling like they are right now. Fans and analysts alike also think that he should have been let go by the team after last year’s epic collapse in the playoffs against the Jacksonville Jaguars, in which Los Angeles gave up a 27-0 lead.

If you pay attention to the Chargers, then you know the root of their problems is with the defense, and the horrible game management, all of which are under the control of Staley. Los Angeles has been a laughingstock of the league after many blown leads and horrific game plans, and Chargers fans have had enough of it. They have been calling for the team to fire Staley for a long time, but for some reason, the team decided to keep him.

    Los Angeles Chargers Struggles

On the other side of the argument, some think that while Staley is not a good head coach, the struggles the team is having are not all on him. Quarterback Justin Herbert had an amazing game on Sunday, going for 323 passing yards and four touchdowns in the loss. Many think that Herbert is having a down year, and a lot of that can be due to the new offensive scheme run by Kellen Moore. Moore is in his first year as the offensive coordinator with the Chargers, so it could take some time for the players to be comfortable with the new scheme.

On the defensive side, the Chargers have struggled for the last few seasons under Staley. Defensive coordinator Derrick Ansley does not even call the plays for the defense, Staley does. Staley came over as a “defensive mastermind” from the Los Angeles Rams, but it has not translated over to the Chargers so far. They have been amongst the bottom 10 in defense since Staley became the head coach, and it has probably been the most criticism he has received over his career.

Los Angeles is 4-5 and will travel to Wisconsin next week to take on the Green Bay Packers. The Chargers have done well so far this season against teams that do not have a winning record, however, if they want to be a playoff contender, they will have to do that against winning teams, and Chargers fans think that firing Staley would be the best way to start that process.
