The NFL MVP race may be the tightest and most competitive in years this upcoming 2024 season.
Given that a quarterback has won the award for the past 11 seasons, it’s easy to imagine Patrick Mahomes winning his third, Lamar Jackson claiming it for a second consecutive year, or even Joe Burrow, Aaron Rodgers, or Jalen Hurts taking the prize.
If everything falls into place, we could also see newcomers like C.J. Stroud or Jordan Love in the mix, as well.
There is, though, no ironclad rule that the MVP has to be a quarterback, and at least one current NFL coach believes that one of the league’s more dynamic offensive skill players is poised to take home the award this season.
NFL Coach Makes Case for Tyreek Hill as 2024 MVP
While Lamar Jackson won the MVP award last season, Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill finished in sixth place. One coach believes Hill not only closes the gap, but emerges as the first position player since Adrian Peterson to win MVP.
“I’m firmly in the camp that Tyreek Hill should get consideration,” an AFC coach not employed by the Dolphins recently told me, when asked for his surprise MVP candidate. “Especially if he puts up the kind of numbers he did last season. Without him, that Dolphins offense isn’t nearly the same and Tua is a way less effective QB.”
Hill is coming off one of the more prolific seasons by a wide receiver in recent memory, catching a career-high 119 receptions for 1,799 yards and 13 touchdowns, while averaging an explosive 15.1 yards per reception in 2023.
There is no question that Hill is one of the more electrifying talents at the position and arguably the engine that drives the Dolphins’ offense and the passing game around Tua Tagovailoa.
However, it is also fair to wonder if Hill can replicate or even surpass his success last season, when the upcoming campaign kicks off with him at age 30, and in an offense that also features the likes of fellow receiver Jaylen Waddle and running back De’Von Achane.
Nevertheless, Hill could be a darkhorse MVP candidate to watch this fall, especially with another year of familiarity in head coach Mike McDaniel’s scheme and Tagovailoa another year into his development.
