East Rutherford, NJ — October 22, 2023 -- Jalin Hyatt of the Giants makes a catch on third down in the first half. The NY Giants host the Washington Commanders at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ on October 22, 2023.

The New York Giants may have found their next star wide receiver in their 14-7 victory over the Washington Commanders. Rookie wide receiver Jalin Hyatt had two receptions for 75 yards on five targets. He has nine receptions for 195 yards on 14 targets through seven games. Hyatt is currently playing 49% of snaps.

The New York Giants are still looking for their WR1

The Giants haven’t had a reliable number-one receiver since Odell Beckham Jr. OBJ had 390 receptions for 5,476 yards and 44 touchdowns in his five seasons with the Giants, reaching 1,000 yards in four out of five seasons with the team.

New York traded OBJ and Olivier Vernon to the Browns in exchange for Jabrill Peppers, Kevin Zeitler, and a 2019 first and third-round pick.

Darius Slayton led the team in receiving yards in 2019, 2020, and 2022, and Kenny Golladay led the team in receiving yards in 2021. Not one player has reached 1,000 receiving yards since Odell’s last year with New York in 2018.

New York addressed their receiving core during the offseason

New York addressed their receiving core during the offseason to build around Daniel Jones. New York re-signed Isaiah Hodgins to a 1-year, $870,000 contract, Darius Slayton to a 2-year, $12 million contract, and Sterling Shepard to a 1-year, $1.3 million contract. They also signed Parris Campbell to a 1-year, $4,700,000 contract and acquired tight end Darren Waller in exchange for a 2023 third-round pick.

New York drafted Jalin Hyatt in the 3rd Round

New York drafted Jalin Hyatt in the 3rd Round, 73rd overall in the 2023 NFL Draft. Hyatt fell in the draft because of his limitations at route running. He’s on the smaller side at 185 pounds and was a one-year wonder at Tennessee.

Hyatt had an impressive offseason, showing off his speed and clocking in at 24 miles per hour. He also has improved his route running abilities. Hyatt had five receptions for 31 yards and one touchdown on seven targets in the preseason.

The starting receivers for the Giants to start the season were Isaiah Hodgins on the left side, Darius Slayton on the right side, and Parris Campbell in the slot. Isaiah Hodgins played the majority of the snaps in the first three games of the season. Hyatt has taken over the last four games, getting the majority of the snaps.

Another receiver that has fallen in the rotation is Parris Campbell. Parris Campbell got the majority of the snaps in the slot to start the season in place of the injured Wan’Dale Robinson. Since Wan’Dale Robinson is healthy, the Giants are playing Wan’Dale more than Parris in the slot.

Will the Giants sell during the trade deadline?

The trade deadline is on October 31st. Teams have until 4 p.m. Eastern Time to trade players. Parris Campbell and Isaiah Hodgins could be dealt with during the trade deadline.

Who will be the Giants’ number-one wide receiver moving forward?

The Giants’ number-one wide receiver has yet to be determined. Expect Darius Slayton or Wan’Dale Robinson to be the WR1 this season. Jalin Hyatt has a long way to go in being their number-one wideout. He needs to be more than a deep threat for the Giants. He also needs to do a better job running routes.
