The New York Giants season has been one interesting story and as we get to the final week of the year the media covering the team in addition to the fan base is already think about what next season will look like. The Giants are eliminated from the playoffs and the season has been one to forget in a year that Daniel Jones went down early to injury.
Running back Saquon Barkley is uncertain about his future with the team as this past season they put him on the franchise tag while they broke the bank for Daniel Jones. The running back was asked questions about his future, and if he would want to be suiting up for the Giants next season.
The New York Giants Need To Pay Saquon Barkley
Saquon seemed like he was placing all of his future on the team itself, and that they will have to come with a fair deal for him to be coming back to the team next season. Barkley does not want to go anywhere but the Giants need to pay the running back like one of the best in the league. Saquon was candid about his future when saying:
“I’ve mentioned before that I want to be a Giant for Life,” Barkley said. “That was a goal of mine when I got drafted. I wanted to leave a legacy here, but it’s out of my control.”
Barkley is being clear that this is the number one destination for him and if he gets the right compensation he would like to stay with the Giants for his entire career. He would be able to be one of the best players if not easily one of the best running backs for the franchise in their entire history, but it is out of his control.
Barkley continued in his press conference to be as candid and direct as possible. He was quoted saying:
“I’m still as open as I was before,” Barkley said. “I just want something that is fair. … But like I said, I get it. It’s a business. If it’s not here, hopefully it’s some other place.”
Barkley knows that time is running out for a lucrative second deal, and the man deserves his money after the way he has played and come back from injury. He does not want to get franchised tag again and he knows that he may have to go on strike to get what he’s worth. He doesn’t want any of that to happen though, but he knows if the Giants do not give him what he deserves as one of the best players at the position he will have to do what he feels is right.
As he mentions, this is a business, and even though it would be ideal for him to be on this team for his career he knows he may have to think about other options. If he were to be available to the rest of the league there would obviously be a lot of interest from many teams, as there are only a few players at that position that could be considered better than Saquon.
If this ends up being his last game in New York, it would be emotional to say the least for Barkley. Many Giants fans would be heavily opposed to see such a once in a generation player go, and if Daniel Jones is not the answer at that position, it would be one of the biggest mistakes to chose Jones over Barkley.
