Additionally, the Giants have added assistant head coaching duties to offensive coordinator Mike Kafka’s job description. Meanwhile, quarterback coach Shea Tierney has earned pass-game coordinator responsibilities, while defensive back coach Jerome Henerson will also share the same role. Former Texas State and Tennessee Titans assistant Zak Kuhr will also serve as an assistant for the Giants next season.
Charlie Bullen: Joining New York Giants Defensive Staff
A newcomer to the New York Giants, Charlie Bullen, will be the outside linebackers coach next season. He spent last season with the Illinois Fighting Illini under the same job title. The Fighting Illini struggled on defense last season, allowing 29.4 points per game while finishing with a 6-7 record. Bullen served as the Arizona Cardinals’ outside linebackers coach from 2019 to 2022 under head coach Kliff Kingsbury. According to Bobby Skinner of Jomboy Media, pass rusher Cameron Thomas had the 18th-best win rate in 2022, Bullen’s last with the Cardinals. Meanwhile, Markus Golden had an 11-sack season under Bullen.
Before Arizona, Bullen spent eight seasons with the Miami Dolphins as a defensive assistant. He started his coaching career with his alma mater, the Iowa Hawkeyes, in 2009. Over his 11 seasons in the NFL, his teams own an 80-97-1 record, suitable for a 45% winning rate.
New York Giants: Desperate for Defensive Production
The Giants finished the season 6-11, good for third place in the NFC East. The offense struggled mightily, scoring just 15.6 points per game, the third-worst average in the NFL. The defense didn’t play much better, allowing 23.9 points per game. The team parted ways with defensive coordinator Wink Martindale at season’s end and has since hired former Tennesee Titans defensive play-caller Shane Bowen. The Titans allowed 21.6 points per game under Bowen last season.
Despite a disappointing season, former first-round pick Kayvon Thibodeaux had 11.5 sacks and 12 TFLs. Dexter Lawrence made the Pro Bowl with 4.5 sacks, while Bobby Okere has 149 tackles, two interceptions, and four forced fumbles.
