New York Giants wide receiver Darius Slayton was a fifth-round pick out of Auburn in the 2019 NFL Draft. He is 27 years old and is entering the final year of his contract. Slayton has led the Giants in receiving yards for the past four-of-five seasons.
A season ago, he caught 50 passes for 770 yards receiving and four touchdowns, along with averaging 15.4 yards per catch. The former Auburn Tigers wide receiver was targeted 79 times. He held out during one part of the offseason program because he wanted a new contract.
The odds of the Giants giving him a new contract at the end of the 2024 season may be very slim. There are a lot of other teams that could use Slayton in 2025 and beyond or maybe even before then.
Ryan Fowler Of Bleacher Report Thinks That the New York Giants Should Put Wide Receiver Darius Slayton On the Trade Block
Ryan Fowler of Bleacher Report wrote an article about how each NFL team should have one player on the trade block at this point in the preseason. For the New York Giants, he thinks that wide receiver Darius Slayton should be on the trade block. Fowler said:
“While longtime New York Giants wide receiver Darius Slayton has remained a friendly face in the passing attack, he seems to be on the outside looking in as camp kicks into full gear.
After he skipped part of the offseason in search of a new contract, Slayton’s missed time has put him behind the eight ball. And now, he’s fighting for rotational snaps with Jalin Hyatt, a top-100 selection from 2023 in search of a larger role.
The Giants used a first-round pick on Malik Nabers, added Allen Robinson II in free agency and have other forms of young talent present with Wan’Dale Robinson working into year three.
If head coach Brian Daboll wants to put the onus on his young core to produce, Slayton could become a hot name on the trading block as the season approaches.”
It would make sense for the Giants to trade him to receiver needy team before the 2024 season. New York drafted Malik Nabers sixth overall in the 2024 NFL Draft from LSU. Wan’Dale Robinson is a third-year receiver from Kentucky. Jalin Hyatt is a second-year receiver from Tennessee and he has shown massive strides with quarterback Daniel Jones in training camp.
The emergence of Hyatt is why the former fifth-round selection could be traded. Slayton is with the first unit with Robinson and Nabers at the moment, but the Giants want Hyatt to see the field this season. Even if they were to trade Slayton, they still have Allen Robinson and Isaiah McKenzie as depth pieces at the wide receiver position on the roster.
