The New York Giants, one way or another, need to emerge from this offseason with a plan at quarterback.
Whether that plan involves a high-priced gamble that Sam Darnold has turned a corner in his career and can triumphantly return to the New York market unincumbered by the PTSD from his tenure as the Jets’ former franchise savior as the No. 3 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, a trade for a high-priced veteran such as Kirk Cousins, or adding one of the top passers in this year’s class, figuring out the quarterback position feels like a prerequisite for general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll.
As the NFL Combine nears, when Schoen and Daboll have their chance to meet with the top quarterbacks in this year’s class, there’s an outside chance New York may have its pick of Miami’s Cam Ward or Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders when the draft kicks off in April.
Will the New York Giants Aggressively Try to Land Cam Ward?

Pro Football Focus put together a list of the best option for the quarterback-needy franchises across the NFL, with Ward as the outlet’s pick for the Giants.
“With Daniel Jones, the Giants had a quarterback who rarely generated big plays,” John Kosko writes for PFF. “Especially big-time throws. Over the past four seasons, Jones totaled just 26 big-time throws, the lowest mark among the 31 quarterbacks who attempted at least 1,000 passes in that span. His 1.8% big-time throw rate also ranked dead last, leaving Giants fans with little excitement about the position.
“Enter Cam Ward, a dynamic playmaker with a cannon for an arm. Ward produced 31 big-time throws in 2024 alone, surpassing Jones’ four-year total in a single season. His 31.5% positive throw rate ranked second in the nation, showcasing his ability to push the ball downfield. While he still needs refinement, Ward brings the spark and explosiveness the Giants have been missing at quarterback.”

It’s entirely conceivable that Daboll and the Giants could be drawn to Ward’s big play ability, especially in hopes of maximizing field-stretching wide receiver Malik Nabers’ impact in 2025, and beyond.
What the Giants do at quarterback remains to be seen, but will be one of the most fascinating and important storylines of the NFL offeason.
