The New York Giants have been trying to figure out how to be more of a contender this season and have struggled with a 2-4 record, including 0-3 inside MetLife Stadium entering this week. However, during the fourth quarter of their game against the Philadelphia Eagles, coach Brian Daboll made a massive decision to bench Daniel Jones.
Daniel Jones has been unable to get much going in this game as he has gone 14-of-21 for 99 yards through the air and five rushing attempts for 20 yards (4.0 yards per carry) on the ground in the game while also being sacked seven times. The New York Giants need a spark as they have struggled to get going and Daboll called on backup quarterback Drew Lock to help the offense get going.
Daniel Jones has been struggling throughout the season as entering this game, he was 136-of-219 (62.1%) for 1,343 yards with just six passing touchdowns to four interceptions. It is difficult to pin all of the offensive struggles on Jones, but his play with some talented skill position players on the field has been less than ideal.
It will be interesting to see if the New York Giants are officially going to make the quarterback change going forward or if this is just for the remainder of the Week 7 game.
What do the New York Giants do with Daniel Jones going forward?
Daniel Jones is in a bit of a no-win situation right now. He signed a four-year, $160 million contract extension ahead of the 2023 season but there is a potential ut of the contract after this season. If the Giants decide to move on, it will leave $22.21 million of dead cap on their books but it seems apparent that this would be the move to make from the front office perspective.
Daniel Jones has not played up to a starting quarterback level with 68 passing touchdowns in 66 career games entering this matchup. The New York Giants need to move on from the Daniel Jones experiment and look for a new quarterback for the future, whether it is in the NFL draft, trade, or free agency.
