The New Orleans Saints were faced with a potential cap casualty this offseason. This is because RB Alvin Kamara was due to make more than $32 million over the next two years. As a result, things between the Saints and Alvin Kamara have gotten tense.
As training camp is set to begin in New Orleans, the team has received a crucial update on Alvin Kamara. Read below to find out what that update is.
Alvin Kamara Shows Up to New Orleans Saints Training Camp
According to Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football, Alvin Kamara showed up to training camp today for the New Orleans Saints. This is a huge step in the right direction for both Kamara and the Saints. That is because back in June, Kamara left the Saints’ mandatory minicamp due to this contract dispute. However, there still does not seem to be an update on a potential new contract despite this move.
Will Alvin Kamara Get Cut?
If you read the previous article about this subject in the link above, you will see that the Saints are in a tricky situation when it comes to Kamara’s contract. It is backloaded and there is a financial incentive for the Saints to cut Kamara before the 2024 regular season begins. However, given that it has not happened yet, it is reasonable to believe New Orleans wants to try to work out a deal with Kamara.
Alvin Kamara’s Career With Saints
Kamara has certainly had a notable career with the New Orleans Saints. This will be Kamara’s eighth season in the NFL, all of which have been with the Saints thus far.
So, what has Kamara done in his first seven years to be such a memorable player for the Saints? Well, he has 5,829 rushing yards, 4,219 receiving yards, 54 rushing touchdowns, and 23 touchdown receptions. It is safe to say Kamara has been a major asset as both a rusher and a receiver.
The problem is Kamara is not getting any younger. He is about to be 29 years old, which is considered old for a skill position such as running back. Plus, Kamara has had just 10 total touchdowns in his last two seasons.
This will be a pivotal year for the Saints considering they had a disappointing finish to 2023. We will have to see if Kamara will still be on the team and help New Orleans get redemption this season.
