The New England Patriots are moving to their rookie quarterback just five games into the year. This is a monumental change, as now the Drake Maye era has begun in New England, and that means that their previous starter Jacoby Brissett will be heading to the bench to back up their No. 3 overall pick for the foreseeable future.
New England Patriots Send Jacoby Brissett To The Bench
Maye was drafted to be the future of the team, and they are turning to him after their 1-4 start to the season. He is jumping right into the fire as they play the Houston Texans this week, one of the best teams in the conference, and a very solid defense.
The Patriots, on the other hand, have had the single worst offensive line through the first five weeks of the season, which has led to many analysts questioning this decision to put Maye into the fire just five games into the year. Either way, Maye becoming the starter means that Brissett is heading to the bench probably for a while.
Brissett has not been great this year, mostly due to the Patriots having the worst offensive line in the NFL, but he has not helped with his inability to make any big plays. On Thursday the quarterback gave his reaction to the benching after only five games saying:
“I don’t think words can really describe how tough it is,” he said, according to Patriots reporter Doug Kyed.
Brissett has seen the backup spot for most of his career so this is nothing new for him, but being benched after only five games, with two of those games being right there at the end to win them, has got to hurt.
The team almost beat the Seahawks in overtime and probably should have won that game, and they had a go-ahead touchdown taken off the board for a strange rule. Perhaps that is part of the reason for putting Maye in as he has proven that he has been better since training camp, but the team must not have wanted to put him into the fire in week 1. Perhaps with just a bit better play at the quarterback position, the team can be winning some of the se close games.
Maye does not have to be pressured to need to perform incredibly as the team has started quite poorly in their first five games.
Are The New England Patriots Out Of Playoff Contention Already?
Just based on the numbers, of course, the team is not out of playoff contention, but with the way they started, they look incredibly far from being anywhere near the playoffs. However, after this very tough game against Houston, the team has many winnable games for weeks ahead of them.

This year will just be a nice warm-up for Maye as he enters the NFL starting role at such a young age, but at the same time, he can prove a lot in the next 10 games about what should be expected to come in New England.
