LINCOLN, NE – In a turn of events that shocked the Husker athletic department, Athletic Director Trev Alberts has resigned as the Huskers AD and has accepted the same position at Texas A&M. The Husker athletic department staff was notified of the decision via email.
Husker Staff,
I am writing to inform you that earlier today, I informed Interim President Kabourek that I am resigning my position as Director of Athletics to accept the same role at Texas A&M. I am very sorry for the timing and that I was not able to communicate these changes to you in person.
Thank you so much for all that you have done to make Husker Athletics so special. I am grateful for all that we accomplished together and believe that because of you, Nebraska is well positioned for the evolving changes within our industry. Tough decisions will need to be made, unity of vision and high execution will be necessary, but I am confident that leadership in Nebraska will rise to the occasion.
Nebraska Athletics is full of high character, hardworking and talented staff, and coaches. It was an honor to get to partner with you to experience unprecedented success. Thank you again.
Trev

TexAgs reported earlier this morning that Alberts had accepted the position, but that news was met with disbelief and out right denial by those who were blindsided by the news.
Associate athletic director Doug Ewald told the AP that Alberts was still considering the offer as of early Wednesday afternoon. “The decision is still to be made,” Ewald said.
Wednesday morning, Melissa Lee, the Chief Communications Officer for the University of Nebraska System said, “Trev has not informed President Kabourek that he has accepted another opportunity.”
The news is quite surprising, considering, Trev Alberts received a contract extension in November of 2023 that raised his salary to $1.7 million a year with a liquidation clause (Nebraska would be owed $4.120 million in damages if he were to resign this year) if he were to leave for another job.
Alberts has been the athletic director at Nebraska since 2021 and was a key cog in the process of Nebraska hiring football head coach Matt Rhule. He has also spearheaded the Memorial Stadium renovation project and finalized the state of the art student athlete facilities.
Trev Alberts: Why Leave Now?
Although shocking, why would Trev Alberts leave his alma mater at what seems to be a turning point for all Husker athletics? The football team is on a positive trajectory under Matt Rhule, both men’s and women’s basketball teams have had breakout seasons, Husker volleyball is dominant, and Husker baseball is off to a hot start. Some may say it’s the instability of the snafu that is the search for a new University president after Ted Carter left December 31st to go to Ohio State.
Or maybe it’s the Title IX issue and lawsuit involving the university. According to a civil lawsuit, former women’s basketball player Ashley Scoggin, accused former Nebraska associate head coach Chuck Love of using his position and influence to groom her into a sexual relationship.
The lawsuit lists Love, head coach Amy Williams, athletic director Trev Alberts and the Nebraska school of regents as defendants. Scoggin is seeking unspecified damages for the alleged violation of her civil rights.

Former Nebraska basketball player has filed a lawsuit against her former assistant coach, head coach Amy Williams, NU Athletic Director Trev Alberts, and NU Board of Regents.
Or, could it be backlash from his former stop as athletic director at UNO, where a memo was leaked about the complete lack of fiscal discipline under Trev Alberts leadership. The memo alleges funds were improperly “disguised” as revenue, and that donors and university leaders were misled on financial details.
Final Thoughts.
For Trev Alberts to leave at this point in the revitalization of Husker Athletics leaves a lot of questions and speculation. Nebraskans are loyal to a fault, and for one of our own to leave us high and dry is a real gut punch. I can’t imagine he’ll be offered any free beers at local Nebraska establishments any time soon.
