The Nebraska Cornhuskers concluded their season with another heartbreaking one-score loss, this time to the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Husker fans were elated to break the bowl game drought that went back to 2016 with a win over the Wisconsin Badgers the week before, but the week following the end of the season has them in full panic mode.
Nebraska Cornhuskers coaches and players are leaving
While Nebraska fans anticipated the departure of defensive coordinator Tony White after he fielded several head coaching job interviews following the 2023 season, many were shocked that he decided to make a seemingly lateral move.
White accepted the job as the defensive coordinator for the Florida State Seminoles, who had what many consider the most disappointing season in college football this year. After going 13-0 before being left out of the four-team College Football Playoff, the Seminoles and head coach Mike Norvell responded with a 2-10 season with wins over Charleston Southern and Cal.
Along with White, defensive line coach Terrence Knighton is leaving for the Seminoles. Knighton’s crew was the heart and soul of an extremely solid yet inconsistent defense in 2024. The departure of Knighton has led to the departure of several players, inciting panic within the Nebraska fan base.
White’s defense looked like they could compete with anyone in the country when they stifled the Ohio State Buckeyes and completely dominated the Colorado Buffaloes. They also looked like a bottom-feeder Big Ten defense when they allowed the Indiana Hoosiers to put up 56 points on them as well as the now-fired Eric Bienemy-led UCLA offense to hold the ball for 14 of the first 17 minutes of the game.
Departures of key players like Mikai Gbayor, Jimari Butler, James Williams, Stefon Thompson and Princewill Unmanmielen along with White’s departure have some fans in panic mode so much so that head coach Matt Rhule addressed the panic in an article from 247 Sports.
“I’m proud of the guys for that. I think at the same time getting to the end of the year … obviously we’ve had some things happen; a lot of people are kind of freaked out. I’m sitting here calm as can be. This is what is supposed to happen. Like, you’re supposed to have good players, other schools are supposed to come try to get your players. You’re supposed to go recruit at a high level. We’re going to be just fine. December has been a quiet month for a couple years and it won’t be quiet moving forward.”
Can’t believe we just lost Tony white to 2-9 FSU
