Per multiple reports, a former college football player for Ole Miss who transferred to Southern Miss was shot and killed on Tuesday. Southern Miss released a statement on Wednesday following news of the tragedy.
MJ Daniels was shot and killed Tuesday night

According to the Associated Press, MJ Daniels, 21, died after he was shot:
Marcus “MJ “Daniels, a defensive back at Southern Miss, was shot to death Tuesday night at an apartment complex in Hattiesburg, a coroner said.
Daniels’ body was sent to a medical examiner for an autopsy, Forrest County Coroner Lisa Klem said.
Daniels played college football for Ole Miss before transferring

Per his recruiting profile on 247 Sports, Daniels was a multi-sport athlete who played baseball and football at George County High School in Lucedale, MS. Daniels enrolled at Ole Miss in January 2021 and transferred to Southern Mississippi in December of 2022.
Southern Miss released a statement

Southern Miss released a statement on Wednesday:
The University of Southern Mississippi and the Department of Athletics mourn the loss of M.J. Daniels whose life was lost Tuesday evening during an incident that occurred off campus. We send our sincere condolences to his family, friends and teammates during this difficult time.
Daniels, from Lucedale, Mississippi, was a member of the Golden Eagle football team. He played his first season with the Golden Eagles last fall, after transferring from The University of Mississippi. In his lone season with the Golden Eagles, he registered 29 tackles in 12 games played and tied for the team lead in interceptions with three.
The University of Southern Mississippi Student Counseling Services has been made available to members of the Golden Eagle football program and individuals close to the university. Out of respect for the family and all impacted in this matter, the University and Athletic Department will have no further comment at this time.
No other details about the shooting have been released.
