The Minnesota Vikings and Kansas City Chiefs are two teams who are hoping to return to their 2022 success this year. Of course, the Chiefs won the Super Bowl after finishing the regular season 14-3 and acquiring the number one overall seed in the AFC playoffs. The Vikings finished 13-4 which was good enough for the second overall seed in the NFC playoffs. Now the two teams are being named in a pretty significant trade prior to the start of the 2023 season.
The Minnesota Vikings Land Running Back Clyde Edwards-Helaire From The Kansas City Chiefs In Major Trade Proposal
Alex Ballentine of Bleacher Report initially reported the possibility of this trade and highlighted the impact it would have:
With Isiah Pacheco and Jerick McKinnon taking over clearly defined roles down the stretch for the Chiefs last season, it’s hard to find a role for Clyde Edwards-Helaire.
The former first-round pick has been a disappointment, and the fact that the Chiefs were able to replace him with a seventh-round draft pick and cheap free agent is emblematic of the bleak situation running backs face.
For the Chiefs, there’s not a lot of incentive to keep him around, and they would save $2.1 million by trading him.
Still, Edwards-Helaire has a first-round draft pedigree and can do some damage as a receiver out of the backfield. The Chiefs had him playing multiple receiver positions the week of practice leading up to the Super Bowl before he was a healthy scratch.
The Vikings are one of the few teams who could still add a back to their offense. With Dalvin Cook gone, they’ll be relying on Alexander Mattison to shoulder most of the workload. But there’s room for someone like CEH to work as a third-down back.
While Vikings fans are optimistic about Madison after the departure of Dalvin Cook, the fact remains he only rushed 74 times last year for 283 yards and five touchdowns. Adding insurance to the running back room would be a big move for Minnesota.
For comparison, Cook finished 2022 with 274 rushing attempts for 1,174 yards and eight touchdowns. Clyde Edwards-Helaire is no Dalvin Cook, but he is has been part of a Super Bowl winning team and can provide another layer out of the back-field for the Vikings. The Chiefs also declined their 2024 fifth-year option for Edwards-Helaire indicating they are currently not interested in a long-term plan for him.
