The Minnesota Vikings and Justin Jefferson are in the midst of massive contract negations that is sure to make Jefferson the highest-paid wide receiver in NFL history.  While many believed that the contract would get done prior to the season starting, that won’t be the case.

Minnesota Vikings Fail To Reach Contract Extension With Justin Jefferson Prior To The Start Of The 2023 NFL Season

    According to Adam Schefter:

Vikings’ All-Pro WR Justin Jefferson is not expected to sign a contract extension before Sunday’s opener, per sources. Both sides made a strong effort to get a deal done, but the plan now is to revisit after the season.

Jefferson’s contract negotiations with Minnesota were updated just a few days ago by Dianna Rusinni of The Athletic. Both sides were working hard to reach an agreement on a new contract for the 24-year-old next year. It was believed that the contract negotiations were nearing and end:

“Two weeks ago, when I was in Minnesota, I asked Justin Jefferson about the status of his deal. He had no updates for me, saying he, ‘doesn’t like to discuss his business.’ Fair. However, he did say it with a huge smile, probably because he knows this team has been motivated to get it done.

“Jefferson has practiced all of training camp, trusting the team will give him a contract that could make him the highest-paid non-QB player in the league. (I’m sure Bosa and Jones also hope to take the title.) Good news for Kirk Cousins, I learned there are no concerns that if a deal isn’t reached Jefferson would miss games. Based on my conversations, this is looking to be a contract that will be announced (and celebrated) very soon,” Russini wrote.

The fact that the contract didn’t get done before the season will certainly spark conversations about his future in Minnesota.  While there is next to zero chance he is ever traded, fans hope whatever the hold ups were don’t linger into next off-season.
