Minnesota Vikings’ QB Future Up In The Air (For Now)
The Minnesota Vikings are, for the next few hours at least, in quarterback limbo, as the legal tampering period before free agency looms fast.
Their quarterback for the past 6 seasons , Kirk Cousins, is set to be a free agent come Wednesday as a new deal is yet to be signed. Despite the fact that the Vikings have shown their desire to keep the 4 x Pro Bowler in house amidst his likely hefty price tag, Cousins has yet to make a decision.
By Sunday evening, however, the Michigan native will reportedly reveal his plans to Minnesota’s front office and decision makers, and we will learn whether he will stay in Minneapolis or depart for pastures greener.
Vikings Have Lined Up Former 1st Overall Pick As Contingency Plan If Kirk Cousins Leaves
Mike Florio speculated on Saturday that the Minnesota Vikings could go after Baker Mayfield, coming off arguably his best season in which he lead the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to the divisional round of the playoffs.
Vikings insider, Darren Wolfson, confirmed that this could well be the case, per the “Mackey and Judd” podcast, stating that Mayfield will indeed be their top choice in the scenario that Cousins departs next week.
Could The Vikings Draft A Rookie QB In 2024?
The Minnesota Vikings are in a tough spot, as they always seem to lurk in the 11-24 positions in the draft: never low enough to be indicative of palpable post-season success, but never high enough to be able to go after the top quarterback prospects in the draft.
The Vikings, according to reports, would worry about both drafting a 1st round QB and keeping Cousins, feeling that the locker room health could be at risk, especially if, like this year, where the Vikings started 1-4, Minnesota struggles at the season’s outset.
Whilst the “top 3” signal callers in this year’s draft, Caleb Williams; Drake Maye; and Jayden Daniels, will all likely be gone by the time the Vikings pick at 11, players like Bo Nix, JJ McCarthy and Michael Penix Jr. could be in play – all of whom are considered at the very least potential 1st round picks.
Perhaps Minnesota would rather take a flier on a younger player for a season or 2 and rebuild the roster under a cheaper rookie QB deal, rather than stay in the average-good cycle that they seemed trapped in with Kirk Cousins.
All will be revealed tonight.
