The Miami Dolphins starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is taking the first steps towards a hold out to begin this season in hopes of getting his new contract. While it is expected that Tua gets a huge contract soon, nothing has progressed in his contract talks so far.
Per NFL insider and CBS Sports analyst Jonathan Jones, the Dolphins quarterback has been absent for almost all of the team’s voluntary workouts.
Is Tua Tagovialoa Going To Hold Out For Big Money?
While many older players sometimes skip out of the voluntary workouts, Tua is quite a different case. The young star quarterback should be there, and the fact that he isn’t must mean it has to do with contract negotiations.
In his firs four NFL seasons, Tua has shown up to every voluntary workout, ad this absence has all to do with him not getting his huge contract yet. What makes things even more interesting about his absence, is that Tua apparently told Adam Beasley that he would for sure be attending the voluntary workouts in spring.
Tua has just one year left on his contract that will expire at the end of the 2024 season. Tua definitely wants to receive his huge extension before this season begins, and he deserves it.
Way back in January, when the Dolphins season ended, general manager Chris Grier was candid about wanting the quarterback to be in Miami long term, and that the team’s plan is to keep him.
“We never talk about money or anything, just good conversations about where he is and the relationship with (head coach) Mike (McDaniel) and the team here and everything he’s done,” Grier said, via CBS Sports. “So the goal is to have him here long-term playing at a high level. That’s always the goal and we’ll continue to communicate with him through the offseason here.”
Tagovailoa finished last season with the most impressive stat line of any quarterback. He totaled; 4,624 passing yards (most in NFL), 29 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions. However, Tua did not manage to perform well against the better teams in the league, and got smacked in the Wild Card round of the post season.
While Tua should get his money soon, we will have to wait and see how this progresses, and if Tua will fully hold out to start the year if Miami does not lock him up.
