The Kansas City Chiefs have devastating news for a star wide receiver in the regular season. The Chiefs are expected to be without their No. 1 wide receiver for the rest of the regular season after they were hospitalized with a shoulder injury during a preseason game in August.
The Kansas City Chiefs had WR problems in 2023
Wide receiver depth was an issue for the Chiefs during the regular season last year. The Chiefs led the league in drops in 2023. Fortunately for the Chiefs, then-rookie Rashee Rice stepped up in the postseason to give Patrick Mahomes critical help as a target on the team’s Super Bowl run.
The Chiefs addressed the receiver position this offseason big time. They added Marquise Brown in free agency and drafted Xavier Worthy in the first round. The Chiefs were hoping to rely on Brown to be Mahomes No. 1 receiver this season as the team competes for a three-peat.
Marquise Brown sustained a shoulder injury in the preseason
Unfortunately for the Chiefs, Brown suffered a shoulder injury in the Chiefs’ first preseason game in August against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Brown was hospitalized for the injury. The injury was not initially considered to be long-term after Brown was released from the hospital.
However, circumstances have changed.
On Friday the Chiefs placed Brown on injured reserve.
Brown is expected to miss the regular season
According to Adam Schefter with ESPN, the Chiefs do not believe Brown will return to play in the regular season. He will need surgery to repair the shoulder injury.
While the Chiefs aren’t ruling out Brown to be available for the postseason, the team doesn’t expect the 2019 first-round pick to play any earlier than “mid-January,” per Schefter.
Brown signed a one-year deal with the Chiefs worth up to $11 million in the offseason.
Brown’s prognosis will undoubtedly mean head coach Andy Reid will receive more scrutiny for his decision to give his starters so many snaps in the preseason.
