LSU has been able to pick up a couple of extremely valuable players from the transfer portal in recent weeks. They have added another strong asset to their roster for their 2025 campaign: true freshman quarterback Michael Van Buren Jr. Michael decided to transfer to SEC rival school LSU after a rough 2-10 season with the Mississippi State Bulldogs. This addition, along with the six other transfers that have committed to the Tigers, will give this team depth next year on both sides of the ball.
Van Buren Jr. played in nine games in his first year at Mississippi State. He managed to throw for over 300 yards in two of those games, one of which was in a close game against powerhouse Georgia. He gained a significant amount of experience playing in the SEC as a freshman; six of the nine games in which Michael was under center were against ranked opponents. One wrinkle in his game is that he struggles with pressure from pass rushers. This is something that can be fixed with more experience and dedication to film.
LSU QB Room
Before the news regarding Van Buren Jr.’s commitment, Tiger fans were informed that their starting quarterback was going to return to Baton Rouge for his final year of eligibility. Garrett Nussmeier expressed his commitment to giving LSU fans a season much greater than this year’s; he intends to bring the university a championship. Having Nussmeier back will be beneficial to Van Buren Jr.’s development; Michael can pick the brain of a captain who has led a highly regarded program. Michael can take this year to learn and progress; then it will more than likely be his turn to lead the Tigers when Garrett’s eligibility has expired.
Bounce back
Garrett Nussmeier and the Tigers finished the regular season at 8-4. The three consecutive losses they suffered in the second half of the year ruined their College Football Playoff chances. They are making steps in the right direction to achieve Nussmeier’s goal of winning a championship next year. The Tigers have, as of now, picked up multiple four-star wide receivers from the transfer portal to ensure that Nussmeier is surrounded by talent outside of the hashes. An 8-4 record might be good or even great for many teams across the country, but a record like that is not viewed the same at a premier university such as LSU. With the way things are shaping up currently, the Tigers could be a dangerous team this upcoming year.
