There were a lot of good things that came out of the Chargers performance on Sunday. From there improvement against the run, to playing clean football only being penalized three times for 11 yards. But there were some players that really stood out during this AFC west showdown that are deserving of some praise. Three Chargers earn Player of the Week.

I’m sure it’s shocking not to see Justin Herbert mentioned here. However, if there is one thing we have all noticed, it’s that that level of play is just another day at the office for the superstar. All eyes were on Rookie Guard Zion Johnson at Sofi stadium. The lineman out of Boston College played outstanding considering being put up against an elite defensive line for his first test. Despite an insignificant run game from the Chargers, Coach Lombardi showed full confidence in the rookie trying to close out the game by running right up the right side behind Johnson. He also only allowed two pressures on the day and did not allow the pass rush to get to his quarterback at all.
Chargers Defensive Player of the Week
It’s no surprise to see Edge Rusher Khalil Mack’s name attached to this award. The former Raider has been an absolute force during his entire career in both Oakland and Chicago. After suffering a season ending injury last year, there was speculation on if Mack would be the same player he has proven to be. He quickly stopped the questions by posting an impressive three sacks, six TFL, and one FF against his former team. It’s safe to say that Mack is still the same player, and he will continue to uplift this Chargers defense.

Special teams has been the Chargers Achilles heel for a long time now. Whether it’s kicking, punting, returning, or coverage, the Chargers have been less than impressive in this phase of the game. The signing of former Packers punter JK Scott has gone under the radar this off season. Scott put his leg on full display Sunday adding another dangerous element to this Chargers team. He averaged 49 yards on four punts including one inside the two yard line

Mack and Scott were two players that were recognized by not only us, but were given game balls from Head Coach Brandon Staley during the victory locker room speech. Look for these players to continue to shine as they head into another high-intensity matchup against the Chiefs on Thursday.
