The Los Angeles Chargers made a big splash this offseason. They did this by hiring Jim Harbaugh to become their next head coach. After a humiliating 63-7 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders, the Chargers decided to fire head coach Brandon Staley.
It made sense for the Chargers to hire a new head coach. However, with how notable Harbaugh is in the football world, it may end up changing the football landscape. With one recent coaching report that came out, a disturbing trend points back to Harbaugh.
Los Angeles Lakers Want Connecticut HC Dan Hurley

In a bombshell report by Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, he revealed that the Los Angeles Lakers are actively targeting Dan Hurley. For football fans who are not familiar with this head coach, he has won the NCAA basketball national championship with the University of Connecticut the last two years.
He is arguably the most successful coach in the college basketball world at this moment. Later this morning, John Fanta of FOX Sports revealed that Hurley talked to the Connecticut basketball team and confirmed that the Lakers made him a real offer. As a result, college sports could lose another notable coach to the pros despite Connecticut having a very lucrative contract extension for Hurley on the table according to Fanta.
Losing Championship Coaches Due to Money for Athletes?

If Hurley goes to the Lakers, it would be the second notable coach to move to the pro level in his respective sport this year. Jim Harbaugh recently left the University of Michigan in favor of the Chargers’ head coach position. He did this immediately after winning the college football national championship over Washington this past season.
Recently, the NCAA made a shocking decision to start paying Division I athletes in 2025. A notable detail to this is at the time of writing, it would only be athletes who are playing and have recently played in power conferences. Still, this will likely make acquiring and retaining elite athletes very difficult for schools moving forward.
Los Angeles Chargers and College Sports Moving Forward

In 2024, the Chargers will hope Jim Harbaugh can lead them back to the playoffs. He has not only won with Michigan but also led the San Francisco 49ers to a Super Bowl XLVII appearance.
As for the NCAA, they will likely be watching Hurley and the Lakers closely. If Hurley leaves the most successful basketball program immediately after Harbaugh left the most successful football program, that has to be a major red flag for the NCAA moving forward.
