Last night, the Los Angeles Chargers had a humiliating loss on Thursday Night Football. After allowing 63 points to the Las Vegas Raiders last night, Chargers owner Dean Spanos finally had enough. This morning, Los Angeles took drastic action.
Los Angeles Chargers Clean House
This morning, the Chargers decided to fire head coach Brandon Staley and general manager Tom Telesco. Staley spent just three seasons as the head coach of the Chargers. However, there were several memorable Chargers losses under his reign.
As for Telesco, he has a longer history with the Chargers. That is because he has been the Chargers general manager for 11 seasons. Unfortunately, last night’s loss seemed to be the straw that broke the camel’s back for the organization.
Dean Spanos Statement
Dean Spanos released a statement this morning after the firings went public. It addressed the tenure of both men along with the state of the Chargers’ organization. Spanos had this to say:
“I want to thank Tom and Brandon for their hard work, dedication, and professionalism, and wish both them and their great families nothing but the best. These decisions are never easy, nor are they something I take lightly – especially when you consider the number of people they impact. We are clearly not where we expect to be, however, and we need new vision. Doing nothing in the name of continuity was not a risk I was willing to take. Our fans have stood strong through so many ups and downs and close games. They deserve more. Frankly, they’ve earned more. Building and maintaining a championship-caliber program remains our ultimate goal. And reimagining how we achieve that goal begins today.” -Dean Spanos
Looking Back at the Los Angeles Chargers
The Chargers have had a history of being disappointing. The franchise has still never won a Super Bowl to this day. Just in the last three years, Chargers fans have experienced a lot of heartbreak under Brandon Staley. Just how bad has it been?
In 2021, the Chargers had a chance to make the playoffs if they defeated the Raiders in the regular season finale. They ended up losing that game and missing out on the playoffs. It is ironic that the Raiders once again played a part in the Chargers’ demise last night.
If that was not enough, Los Angeles was on the wrong side of one of the biggest collapses in NFL playoff history. Last year, they led a wild card game against the Jacksonville Jaguars 27-0 late in the second quarter. You would think the Chargers would cruise to a victory right?
Well, not quite. The Jaguars ended up overcoming that deficit and winning the game 31-30. As a result, the Chargers were eliminated in shocking fashion. Now, they look to move in a new direction where these types of losses do not happen again.
