Are the Las Vegas Raiders serious players in the Justin Fields sweepstakes?
Another day, another Justin Fields trade proposal; it seems like post-football winter life has taken its full hold, until we start to get swept up in the Scouting Combine, free agency in March and the long-awaited NFL Draft in April.
The NFL Is Officially In Slow Season After Climactic Super Bowl
Before long, its the beginning of May, and whilst there is no more football related anything to look forward to outside of the occasional news burst and now somehow marquee event of the NFL schedule release, at least it will be warm and summer and we can find enjoyment outside of this all-dominating sport.
However, for now, and for the next couple of weeks, we are still in that post-Super Bowl cold February time when the sporting world comes to a brief standstill, it is back to the trusty rumor mill.
And there is no one who has circled this mill more than current Chicago Bears quarterback, Justin Fields.
Justin Fields On The Move During Turbulent Offseason
After seemingly endless trade proposals and gossip concerning his future, as it now seems as if Justin Fields will be on the move after unfollowing the Chicago Bears on Twitter, amidst heating noise that the Bears will take Caleb Williams with the 1st overall pick come April’s draft.
After being linked with both the Atlanta Falcons and Pittsburgh Steelers, it seems like now the Las Vegas Raiders should be considered legitimate contenders for his services, according to ESPN’s Field Yates.
Las Vegas Raiders A Natural Fit For Fields?
According to Yates, the ties Justin Fields has to Vegas, through former offensive coordinator, Luke Getsy, who is now the OC for the Raiders, may influence the move in a positive direction.
“After the Raiders hired Luke Getsy (formerly the Bears’ offensive coordinator) as their offensive coordinator, no other team has a better snapshot of what Fields brings than the Raiders. Getsy’s opinion surely would influence the viability of a deal like this getting done.”
And whilst coordinator’s do like to bring players with them to their new teams, after drawing much criticism for his use of the former 11th overall pick, it does not seem automatic that Getsy – or Fields – would necessarily want an imminent reunion.
On the other end, as trade compensation, Yates has the Raiders giving up a 3rd round pick in this year’s NFL draft (73 overall), and former Pro Bowl slot receiver, Hunter Renfrow.
Whilst Renfrow doe have that Pro Bowl to his name from 2021, he has not been the same player over the past two seasons since the implementation of Josh josh ‘ offense, and continuing through to the current Antonio Pierce regime.
After attaining over 1000 yards from the slot in 2021, Renfrow has barely managed half of that total since, posting up a combined 585 yards over the past two seasons, despite signing a 2 year, $32 million extension coming off of his Pro Bowl year.
However, his value has never been tied to his purely athletic prowess, famously running a 4.59 in the 2019 Scouting Combine, so one feels that it is more likely that he is being played in the wrong scheme, rather than early physical decline.
Fields could well thrive in Las Vegas if the pieces are around him, and the offensive line gets significant upgrades, however, one can’t help but feel that the Raiders could be in total offensive overhaul, and may prefer to draft someone new, or pickup a low level free agent instead of spending valuable draft capital on Fields.
