The Las Vegas Raiders recently fired their head coach Josh McDaniels this week, making the interim coach Antonio Pierce. Pierce has been the team’s linebackers coach since last season, and he will look to win over the Raiders locker room. There is a name floating around the organization for who is to be their long-term coach in the future and Sports Illustrated’s NFL insider Albert Breer has an intriguing pitch, to say the least.
Bill Belichick Scenario
Breer in his pitch threw out some ideas on who can be the next Raiders head coach. He first brings up that Jim Harbaugh from Michigan could be a good hire, however, given the controversy going on in that program right now, it seems very unlikely. Then, he goes into depth on how New England Patriots Bill Belichick would be a good candidate to go for in the offseason.
“Then, there’s the idea of trying to lure Patriots coach Bill Belichick, with so much of his infrastructure left over in place from the McDaniels era- if Davis is willing to dip into that well again.” This thought is compelling, to say the least, and it is a possibility with all of the rumors going around that Belichick’s job is in jeopardy.
Why The Las Vegas Raiders Make Sense
Belichick just signed a new contract with the Patriots in the offseason, but it is not expected to guarantee that he will remain with the franchise come next season. The team would most likely keep the decorated coach only because of his accomplishments. He is the most accomplished head coach currently in the league since he had Tom Brady as his quarterback. However, all good things come to an end eventually, and the way New England is playing, it could be as soon as next season.
If the Patriots do decide that they will move on from Belichick, Las Vegas would most likely become the frontrunner in landing the head coach. With so many former Patriots players and coaches on the Raiders, they admire the system that he created. Owner Mark Davis has shown that he is not afraid to spend big to help the team win games, and this would likely be the move that would finally propel them to where they want to be.
