Las Vegas Raiders’ Next QB Step After Jimmy Garoppolo Issue, Revealed

Jimmy Garoppolo’s recent issue has only made the Las Vegas Raiders’ decision to move on from him a lot easier. Now, the team is set to find a new quarterback in the offseason.

Garoppolo has always been expected to be released by the team in March following an injury-riddled 2024 campaign. Unfortunately for the veteran QB, he’s suspended for two games next season as a result of his performance enhancing substance violation.

For those who missed it, Garoppolo was found to have violated the NFL’s Performance Enhancing Substances Policy and has been slapped with a suspension at the start of the next campaign. He will not appeal the punishment.

The violation reportedly stemmed from him “using a prescribed medication without having a valid Therapeutic Use Exemption,” according to the sources of Adam Schefter of ESPN.

With that being said, the Raiders only had more motivation to release him. Even better, they are going to save money since his salary guarantee for 2024 would be voided.

“Sources said the Raiders are expected to release Garoppolo before the fifth day of the new league year in mid-March, when he would earn an $11.25 million roster bonus. Garoppolo also has an $11.25 million base salary guarantee for the 2024 season that now could be voided because of the suspension,” Schefter added in a follow-up post on X (formerly Twitter).

Garoppolo’s release will leave the Raiders with just one quarterback in Aidan O’Connell. With that said, their need for another QB amplified heading to free agency and the NFL Draft.

Las Vegas Raiders Could Trade Up in NFL Draft

The Las Vegas Raiders have been largely linked for a potential trade with the Chicago Bears for Justin Fields. The dual-threat QB is expected to be made available since the Windy City franchise is predicted to take Caleb Williams with the no. 1 overall pick.

While that could still be an option, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network revealed that trading up is now something the Las Vegas squad could do.

“The Raiders have been in the market for a QB for 2024, with a potential move up in the draft and looking into the position in free agency. Moving on from Jimmy Garoppolo was always the plan. Now, they can do it without paying his guaranteed money,” Rapoport wrote.

Las Vegas won’t draft until the 13th pick, and by that point, all the top QBs are all probably taken already. If they want to move into the Top 3 spots and select any of the three best QBs in Williams, Jayden Daniels and Drake Maye, however, they will need to give up some assets.

Davante Adams could be an intriguing trade piece. But for now, it’s unknown what they would be willing to see to get their potential quarterback of the future.
