The Las Vegas Police Protective Association sent the Las Vegas Raiders a message about the team’s new rules to enter the stadium. The Raiders could lose the city’s police protection if the team doesn’t abide by the police department’s request.
The Las Vegas Police have an issue with the NFL
Per Andrew Garcia of USA Today, the police union objects to the NFL’s new security policy for the 2024 season. The league is requesting gameday staff submit biometric data in an app before they can enter Allegiant Stadium. The police are especially wary of the facial I.D. they must upload to the app.
Per the USA Today report:
President of the Las Vegas Police Protective Association Steve Grammas made a statement about the changes, emphasizing that the heart of the issue for the union is that collecting this information from staff in such a manner could lead to the data falling “[into] the hands of people who are anti-cop that support a different agenda than what law and order supports.”
The Las Vegas Raiders don’t have an issue with the police
Ownership in Las Vegas doesn’t seem to disagree with the police’s position. However, the union doesn’t think the league will agree to a deal with the police before the season:
The union successfully pushed back on a liability waiver that staff would have been required to sign when working at future games at Allegiant Stadium, however, Grammas is not optimistic about reaching a deal that avoids the NFL collecting biometric data on those working the games.
Per TMZ, police plan to volunteer to work Raiders games to start the season. But they don’t promise to continue policing if the league enforces the facial I.D. policy.
The NFL might want to negotiate with the police on this matter. Frankly, being seen as anti-police is bad for their business.
