Baltimore Ravens running back Derrick Henry is off to a historic start to the season, and impressing his quarterback, Lamar Jackson, in the process.
Through the first seven games of this season, Henry is already knocking on the doorstep of 1,000 rushing yards with 873 on 134 carries while also scoring eight touchdowns as the driving force of the Ravens’ offense.
At this rate, Eric Dickerson’s single-season rushing record of 2,105 yards could be well within Henry’s reach with ten games remaining.
Lamar Jackson on Derrick Henry’s Chances of Breaking Single Season Rushing Record
Jackson needed just two words to describe his feelings about Henry’s chances.
“It’s there,” Jackson told reporters, when asked about Henry’s chances.
Monday night, Henry created some serious distance between the Ravens and Buccaneers when he rattled off an 82-yard run, on his way to finishing with 169 yards.
Henry has already surpassed 100 rushing yards in four of his last five games, underscoring Jackson’s confidence that the future Hall of Fame running back can make this a record-setting season.
“I feel like he has a great chance of achieving that. I think he can do it. I believe he can do it,” Jackson said.
The Ravens and Henry seemed an ideal match from the moment the star running back put pen-to-paper on his contract during free agency this past spring and is certainly following through as one of Baltimore’s most vital weapons.
However, Henry says he isn’t focused on making this a historic season, he has loftier goals in mind.
“I don’t really try to think about that too much,” Henry said when asked about Dickerson’s record. “Just focus on me doing my job and being better and better every week. I don’t really try to get into the statistics of things. I focus on the team goals.”
