The Big 12 saw a couple of team’s College Football Playoff chances crater in Week 10. Previously undefeated No. 11 Iowa State was upset by Texas Tech at Jack Trice Stadium on Saturday. The loss knocked them from being tied atop the Big 12 with BYU to being tied with Colorado. But it was a game in Houston that put a Big 12 contender’s hopes on life support.
Kansas State was in second place in the Big 12
No. 17 Kansas State entered their contest with Houston in second place for the Big 12. The Wildcats’ lone loss of the season came to BYU, so the team needed to win out in order to potentially avenge BYU in the conference championship game and earn an automatic CFP bid.
Things went south for KSU at TDECU Stadium on Saturday. Houston would outscore KSU 24-19 despite the Wildcats outgaining the Cougars in total yards 327-232. KSU lost the turnover battle 2-1. One of the turnovers proved costly, as Houston would cut the Wildcats lead to 19-17 early in the fourth quarter on their offensive drive immediately following an interception by KSU’s Avery Johnson.
Houston pulled a massive college football upset
Kansas State’s offense fell flat in the fourth quarter, as the Wildcats would punt on their next two offensive possessions following the interception. Johnson would throw another interception on KSU’s penultimate drive and the offense would run out of time on the final possession.
Kansas State will host 5-2 Arizona State next week. Houston will travel to play Arizona.
