Earlier today, it was reported that Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is just 14 passing yards away from making a bit of NFL history. As it turns out, he is not the only future Pro Football Hall of Famer on the Chiefs roster that can move up on an all-time list when Kansas City takes on the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday Night Football.
Kansas City Chiefs Tight End Travis Kelce Can Pass Several Franchise and NFL Legends
According to Jordan Foote of Sports Illustrated, nine-time Pro Bowl tight end Travis Kelce needs just a few receiving yards and a touchdown (or two) to pass some significant names in both NFL and franchise history:
“If he can find the end zone in Week 14, the future Hall of Fame man will break his tie with Tony Gonzalez for the most receiving scores in Chiefs history. On top of that, Kelce is 17 total points away from passing running back Priest Holmes for the most by a non-kicker in franchise history.
“Finally, Kelce needs 35 receiving yards to hit the 12,000-yard mark for his career, which is something only two tight ends have ever managed to do. It doesn’t take much for Kelce to etch his name in the history books once again, and it starts with a good showing on Sunday night.”
As one can see, Foote points out that Kelce needs just one touchdown to tie Pro Football Hall of Famer Tony Gonzalez for the most receiving touchdowns in Chiefs history.
Kelce needs three more touchdowns to pass Priest Holmes for the points scored by a non-kicker in franchise history.
35 more receiving yards will give Kelce 12,000 for his career. The only two tight ends in NFL history that have ever recorded that many were Gonzalez (15,127) and Jason Witten (13,046).
Kansas City Chiefs Tight End Travis Kelce Has Played Well vs the Los Angeles Chargers
Since the Chiefs and Chargers play in the same division (AFC West), Kelce has seen plenty of Los Angeles. For his career, he has 107 receptions for 1,312 yards and nine touchdowns in 19 games played against them.
These average out to 5.6 receptions and 69.1 yards per game.
Over his last six games, Kelce has eclipsed 62 receiving yards five times. The only time he did not was a two-catch, four-yard dud of a game against the Buffalo Bills, which remains the only game Kansas City has lost this season.
In these last six games, Kelce has 47 receptions, 388 yards, and two touchdowns. These numbers make up more than half of his receiving totals for the entire 2024 NFL season.
