Even though the Kansas City Chiefs failed to complete a Super Bowl three-peat when they lost to the Philadelphia Eagles last February, they are still very much a team to watch out for in the 2025 NFL season. The presence of Patrick Mahomes under center is a big reason why the Chiefs are still considered a team to beat.

Still just 29 years old, Mahomes has won basically everything there is to win in the NFL, as he’s got three Super Bowl rings, three Super Bowl Most Valuable Player awards and two NFL MVP honors. But losing to the Eagles should give Mahomes additional fuel for his motivation, as he looks to help Kansas City reclaim its spot atop the league.

In any case, Pro Football Focus has the former Texas Tech Red Raiders atop its list of the top 32 quarterbacks in the NFL heading into the 2025 season.

Mahomes still holds the top spot, but the margin has never been slimmer. His passing grade over the past two seasons sits at 86.0, a strong number but a step below the elite level we saw from 2018 through 2022. The supporting cast hasn’t always helped, particularly at receiver, but it’s fair to say his otherworldly level of play we saw from him from 2018 to 2022 is starting to get further and further away in the rearview mirror. That said, no one blends poise, playmaking and postseason performance like Mahomes, which is why he remains at No. 1 entering 2025, even if the field is closer than ever.
