Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has shown he has the ability to lead his team to the Super Bowl with a subpar group of wide receivers, but the Chiefs made an effort to improve the position group anyway.
Free agent acquisition WR Marquise “Hollywood” Brown and second-year WR Rashee Rice both suffered long-term injuries, forcing Kansas City to make a midseason move to try and make improvements to Mahomes’ group of pass catchers.
The Kansas City Chiefs are working to acquire DeAndre Hopkins
According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the Chiefs and the Tennessee Titans are close to finalizing a deal that would send veteran WR DeAndre Hopkins to the Chiefs for a fifth-round pick that could turn into a fourth-round pick.
Sources: #Titans WR DeAndre Hopkins is being traded to the #Chiefs in exchange for a 5th rounder that can get to a fourth rounder. Deal is being finalized.

Hopkins, who has been among the league’s best pass catchers since being drafted in 2013, is coming off of another 1,000-yard season in 2023. Outside of tight end Travis Kelce, Hopkins would immediately become the No. 1 target for Mahomes.
Hopkins has 173 yards receiving and a touchdown on 15 receptions despite starting in just three games this season. Rookie WR Xavier Worthy is the leading healthy receiver for the Chiefs with 198 yards receiving. Kelce has racked up 245 yards receiving.
The Chiefs are the only undefeated team in the NFL through the first third of the season and the addition of Hopkins has a chance to take their offense to the next level. The five-time Pro Bowl selection and three-time first-team All-Pro selection will help improve the Chiefs offense which Mahomes has already clocked improvement in as he said in an article from the Chiefs website.
“I think it’s just showing the versatility of our team. It’s not just about me, it’s not just about the stats and the light show and stuff like that. It’s about playing team football,” Mahomes said. “I believe that if we continue to work, we’ll get better offensively [in terms of] throwing the ball down the field. Until then, it’s nice to know that we have a great running game, we have a great defense and we’re able to execute whenever the time comes to win football games.”
Fans that don’t support the Kansas City Chiefs are not happy about the DeAndre Hopkins trade
After fans watched Mahomes take WRs like Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Kadarius Toney, Mecole Hardman and Sky Moore to another Super Bowl victory in 2023, they aren’t excited at the prospect of their favorite team having to beat Mahomes with a veteran like Hopkins.
Many in the NFL world are calling the move “unfair” as the league has already struggled to stop Mahomes and the Chiefs. Others are saying Hopkins is too old to make a substantial impact for the Chiefs.

Like a 5th rounder for hopkins loss is egregious https://t.co/BhutvUb8lt
