The Kansas City Chiefs looked unstoppable when Eric Bienemy was still the team’s offensive coordinator. The fact that they still made it to Super Bowl LVIII in spite of his absence is a testament to the talent of the team and the coaching staff.
However, Bienemy’s most recent foray away from Chiefs Kingdom ended in a bitter divorce. After recent interactions between the two, is a return to Arrowhead Stadium in the cards for the offensive coordinator?
Kansas City Chiefs talked to Eric Bienemy before AFC Championship Weekend
According to The Spun’s Tzvi Machlin, the former Washington Commanders offensive coordinator got in contact with the Kansas City Chiefs during a crucial time of the postseason.
It was Andy Reid who revealed this fact during one of his interviews with the media:
Speaking to the media on Wednesday, Reid revealed that Bieniemy came in and spoke to the offensive players ahead of their AFC Championship Game win over the Baltimore Ravens.
Bieniemy spent the 2023 season as the offensive coordinator of the Washington Commanders. But it was a rough season for the team as they wound up with the second-worst record in the NFL.
Bieniemy was let go along with head coach Ron Rivera after the season and he does not currently have a job lined up for the 2024 season.
To many Chiefs fans, this could be a sign that their former OC is eyeing a return to Arrowhead Stadium to take over his old post. This is great news for them as they were constantly among the best offenses in the NFL during the time he was making the calls. In his final season with the team, the team had the top-ranked offense in both points and yards.
On the other hand, Matt Nagy is finding it difficult to replicate the success the Chiefs had with Bienemy. The fall-off was sharp during Nagy’s time: the Chiefs ranked 15th in points scored and ninth in yards gained. They had to count on their defense to bail them out multiple times throughout the season.
Nagy’s only hope of keeping his job with the Kansas City Chiefs is if they manage to win a Super Bowl. However, that may not even be enough to keep a talented coach like Bienemy waiting on the sidelines.
