The Kansas City Chiefs were one of the best teams in the NFL last season. Of course, this is an obvious statement given the fact that they were 15-2 and appeared in the Super Bowl for the third consecutive season, though they fell short of winning their third title in a row by being blown out by the Philadelphia Eagles 40-22.
As their loss in the Super Bowl indicated, the Chiefs need to improve in 2025, despite their 15-2 record from a year ago and the fact that they have retained most of their key players, especially on offense. And while they did not make any major additions on the offensive side of the ball, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has an idea of what the team can do to get better this upcoming season.
Kansas City Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid Wants Patrick Mahomes to Throw Down Field More

Last season, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes had 3,928 passing yards, 26 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. And while those numbers are far from bad, they were the worst of his career as an NFL starter.
Back in 2019, Mahomes had 4,031 passing yards, 26 touchdowns, and just five interceptions. In every other year that he has been Kansas City’s starting quarterback, he has eclipsed 4,100 passing yards, and threw over 5,000 yards twice.
The change in last year’s offense was, due to injuries to their starting wide receivers, that Mahomes did not throw the ball downfield nearly as much as he did in the past. And when he did, he was not as successful.
That, according to Zak Keefer of The Athletic, will change in 2025:
“Andy Reid made a point of it all spring on the practice field: The veteran coach wants the Chiefs’ offense to get back to pushing the ball deep down the field, akin to what Patrick Mahomes did so well early in his career. Back then, they tore up the league.
“Kansas City somehow finished 27th in the league in 2024 in passing plays of 20 yards or more, regressing into an underneath offense. But with a deeper receiving room than they’ve had in years — Mahomes mentioned how much of an advantage it is to have Rashee Rice, Xavier Worthy, Hollywood Brown and JuJu Smith-Schuster all back, and all healthy — look for more emphasis on explosion this fall. If so, a 15-2 team from last season could be even better.”
What should help, too, is the fact that 10-time Pro Bowl tight end Travis Kelce is in better shape going into this season than he was all of last year. If Kelce can become an even more substantial threat on shorter passes (and he had 97 receptions for 823 yards in a “down” year last season), the Chiefs’ passing game should return to its familiar dominant form.
