The New York Jets had a tough start to their 2024 season. The San Francisco 49ers dominated both sides of the ball en route to a 32-19 victory on Monday Night. Of course, Aaron Rodgers’ expectations for his return were much different, but so were the defense’s.
In fact, trade talks were reportedly being had on the sideline during the brutal loss.
Jets: Sideline Reporter Announces Trade Talks Happening In-Game During Loss To 49ers
According to Senior NFL Insider Josina Anderson:
Just a thought & something I heard on the MNF sidelines: I think Haason Reddick should pay good attention to how the 49ers pass rush plays out today in this good test for the team with just their 2-Dominant edge mix this season.
Plus, someone from the Jets mentioned their opinion* on the sidelines moment ago to me, saying they think the team needs to make a Reddick trade with the Raiders for Las Vegas’ star receiver. Again, just their opinion that came up in one of my conversations on the sidelines. Plenty of sub plots.
Despite the Jets’ one sack, Brock Purdy faced little resistance in Monday night’s 32-19 beatdown by the 49ers.
It appears as though the Jets may again have to do without the former Eagles linebacker for their Week 2 road game against the Titans (0-1). Jets coach Robert Saleh dodged a question Tuesday morning about his feelings now that the holdout has extended into the season and loomed large in the defeat.
According to Matt Ehalt of The New York Post:
“Regardless of how I feel about it, we’ve got the guys who are here. We’re excited to work with the guys who are here,” Saleh said on a conference call. “I’ll say it again: As soon as he walks through those doors, we’ll give him a big hug and give him a playbook and we can get rolling.”
It remains to be seen whether the Jets will be able to give Reddick a playbook for Week 2 with the star pass-rusher remaining the only player to stay away from his team before Week 1.
The Jets traded a conditional third-round pick to the Eagles to have Reddick essentially replace Bryce Huff, but right now, they just have a gaping hole on their defense.
Reddick wants an extension and is willing to take a financial hit in his standoff, accumulating around $5 million in fines for his absences and forfeiting approximately $800,000 for missing Monday’s game.
Saleh did not make it seem as if there is a resolution in sight.
