On Thursday afternoon, the New England Patriots announced they cut a wide receiver to add a standout from Rutgers. The Patriots are adding depth to their offense ahead of training camp next month.
The New England Patriots need WRs for their QBs
Wide receiver depth is an issue for the Patriots. The New England Patriots invested in the quarterback position in the draft by taking Drake Maye with the No. 3 pick. However, Maye doesn’t have a lot of talent to work with, and he’s struggling during OTAs. Jacoby Brissett appears to be the QB1 for the start of the season.
The Patriots cut T.J. Luther
Brissett needs targets to work with. Per a statement by the Patriots Thursday, the team announced they were releasing T.J. Luther:
24, originally was signed by the New York Jets as a rookie free agent out of Gardner-Webb on May 5, 2023. The 5-foot-11, 195-pounder, spent the majority of his rookie season on the New England practice squad after he was released by the Jets. He spent three seasons at Wofford before transferring to Gardner-Webb for his final season in 2022.
The Patriots signed JaQuae Jackson
With Luther’s spot open, the Patriots signed a familiar name on the East Coast, JaQuae Jackson:
24, originally was signed by the Atlanta Falcons as a rookie free agent out of Rutgers on April 30, 2024. The 6-foot-1, 184-pounder, was released by the Falcons on June 4, 2024. Last season, Jackson played in 13 games with 12 starts and finished second on the team with 361 yards on 22 receptions with one touchdown. He played his four seasons at California (Pa.).
