Per multiple reports, an All-Pro wide receiver who was a major part of the Baltimore Ravens win over the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl XLVII died this weekend. They were most recently a part of Alabama State’s coaching staff as their wide receivers coach.

According to Aaron Wilson with KPRC, he died in his sleep:
Jacoby Jones, a former Texans wide receiver and third-round draft pick from Lane College who emerged as a record-setting Super Bowl standout as a kickoff returner for the Baltimore Ravens, died overnight in his sleep at his suburban Houston home.
No cause of death was immediately announced. Jones was 40 years old.
The Houston Texans drafted Jones in the third round of the 2007 NFL Draft. He stayed with the Texans through the 2011 season. Jones’ former teammate, J.J. Watt, released a statement on X following news of Jones’ death.
“Jacoby was one of the most fun-loving teammates and people I’ve ever been around. Always dancing and laughing, with a permanent smile on his face,” Watt wrote. “Gone far, far too soon. R.I.P Jacoby Jones.”

Jones signed with the Baltimore Ravens in 2012 and earned All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors for that season. He was a major part of the Ravens’ postseason run, making an essential catch against the Denver Broncos in the Divisional Round.

Jones played a crucial role in the Ravens’ win over the 49ers in Super Bowl XLVII. He became the first player to score a receiving touchdown and score a return touchdown in a Super Bowl. He returned the second half’s opening kick 108 yards to complete the longest play in postseason history.
Jones scored 23 total touchdowns in the NFL

Jones spent time with the San Diego Chargers and Pittsburgh Steelers during the 2015 season. He signed a one-day contract with the Ravens in 2017 to retire with Baltimore. He finished his NFL career with 203 receptions for 2,733 yards and 14 receiving touchdowns. He recorded 7,628 yards as a returner and scored nine touchdowns on special teams.
Following his playing career, Jones was an assistant coach with several college teams.
Jones’ former Texans teammate, Matt Schaub, said Jones was one of the most loving teammates in Houston.
“Jacoby Jones was one of the most energetic, and fun loving teammates,” Schaub wrote on X. “Always had a smile on his face and never one to shy away from dancing. Blessed to have shared the huddle with you brother. Gone way to soon. RIP Jacoby.”
