Jackson State Tigers Get $800,000 Headache Because of Deion Sanders

Deion Sanders may have been gone from the Jackson State Tigers for a year now, but still, the team is feeling the negative repercussions of his decisions during his brief tenure with the team.

Apparently, the Tigers now have to pay close to a million dollars because of Sanders even though he’s no longer with the team.

According to Total Pro Sports, the Tigers agreed to pay $800,000 to settle a lawsuit that was thrown at them because of Sanders.

Back in 2022 when Sanders was still with the team, he decided to pull the team out of the Southern Heritage Classic game against Tennessee State. As a result, the organizers of the competition, the Summit Management Corporation, sued the school since they terminated the five-year deal after just three years.

Summit Management Corporation was initially seeking for $1.8 million in damages, but they and Jackson State agreed to an $800,000 settlement.

The full settlement agreement can be viewed at Scribd.

Why Did Deion Sanders Remove Jackson State Tigers From Southern Heritage Classic?

For what it’s worth, Deion Sanders had a good reason for pulling the Jackson State Tigers out of the Southern Heritage Classic. It’s just not profitable for them, and so it didn’t make much economic sense for them to continue when there isn’t a lot of benefit.

When explaining the decision back in 2022, Sanders shared that the classics are only great for the fans but not for the schools and the players.

“These classics aren’t beneficial for us. The fans can kick and scream all they want, but they have to understand we’re doing business in the SWAC [Southwestern Athletic Conference],” Sanders shared at the time, via Andscape.

“Wherever we go to play, we’re the draw. Wherever we go to play, it’s packed. We sell out everywhere. My focus is taking care of my kids and Jackson State.”

Sanders added that he didn’t want to “go to the game and limp back.” Considering the expenses they have to incur to travel to the games, the Tigers barely break even with what they get from the competition.

Sure enough, it’s just bizarre that the Tigers had to pay heavily even though Sanders is no longer with them. But at the end of the day, no one would have thought that Coach Prime would leave the team. Not to mention that his reasoning for pulling out was sound.

Sure enough, though, they could have handled it better with proper communication.
