The Iowa Hawkeyes are once again coming off a season with eight wins and a victory over their rivals across the border.
Head coach Kirk Ferentz has proven to be one of the most consistent head coaches in the country. Iowa joins the Alabama Crimson Tide, Georgia Bulldogs, Clemson Tigers and Ohio State Buckeyes as the only FBS program to have at least eight wins for the past nine years in a row.
The aging Hawkeyes head coach has been with the program for over two decades now, and Iowa fans aren’t sure which season will be his last.
Iowa Hawkeyes HC Kirk Ferentz addressed his future
With the recent firing of Mack Brown at North Carolina, Ferentz is officially the oldest coach in college football. Ferentz’s stint as the Iowa head coach started in 1999. He is now going to be gearing up for another season, before which he will become the only 70-year-old coach in college football.
Ferentz was asked about his future with the program when addressing the media after the regular season. Ferentz joked that his future with the program lay within the hands of the program itself, asking if he is not privy to some knowledge of his potential departure.
Kirk Ferentz on whether he’ll return next season.
“I hope so. You know something I don’t know?”
“That’s the plan.”

Despite some shortcomings like failing to ever reach the College Football Playoff as well as failing to ever win a conference championship, many Iowa fans believe Ferentz has earned the right to finish out his contract as he sees fit.
No way he leaves that money on the table. Plus now his expectations are lower where all he has to beat are the Wisconsins, Nebraska and Minnesota rival teams and people will be satisfied enough. No way boosters will pay $40 mil and buy him out.

I get frustrated at times but he has earned the right to finish out his contract as far as I’m concerned.

Ferentz has led the Hawkeyes to three 10-win seasons since 2019, including a 6-2 COVID season. The Hawkeyes’ rivals, the Nebraska Cornhuskers, are all too familiar with the potential downfalls of firing a coach who knows how to win eight or nine games a season.
