NFL Trade Idea: Indianapolis Colts Address Major Need in Move for Ex-Top 25 Pick

Severak injuries have depleted the Indianapolis Colts most of their cornerbacks this season. According to a proposed NFL trade, the team can address that concern by trading for Kaiir Elam from the Buffalo Bills.

As the Indianapolis Colts won their Week 7 matchup against the Miami Dolphins, injuries in the cornerback position raise concerns for their defensive strategy. The Colts have ruled out Chris Lammons due to an ankle injury, which diminishes their depth in the secondary. His absence is particularly impactful, given that Lammons has been a reliable contributor in coverage.

Further complicating matters, the Colts are already dealing with a limited roster. E.J. Speed, a key linebacker, has been downgraded to doubtful with a knee injury and will not play, which puts additional pressure on the defensive unit. The lack of depth at cornerback could lead to challenges against the Dolphins’ potent passing attack, especially with their wide receivers posing significant threats.

While the Colts still have active players like Josh Downs and Michael Pittman Jr., the defensive side of the ball requires adjustments to compensate for the injuries. The coaching staff will need to devise a game plan that maximizes the abilities of the remaining cornerbacks and potentially utilize safeties in more versatile roles.

This situation emphasizes the importance of depth in the NFL, as injuries can quickly alter the dynamics of a game. The Colts’ ability to adapt will be crucial in this matchup, particularly in containing the Dolphins’ offensive weapons. As the game unfolds, fans will be watching closely to see how the Colts’ defense responds to these setbacks and whether they can maintain effectiveness despite the injuries in the secondary.

Indianapolis Colts Acquire Buffalo Bills’ Kaiir Elam in Proposed NFL Trade

The Colts could use some help when it comes to their cornerback corps. According to ESPN’s Bill Barnwell, the solution may lie in a trade for Elam.

The Colts weren’t exactly stacked at cornerback before the season, and that was before potential breakout candidate JuJu Brents suffered a significant knee injury. Slot corner Kenny Moore has also missed time, while they cut Dallis Flowers in midseason. Waiver-wire acquisition Samuel Womack has been surprisingly impressive in his first taste of starting football, but Indianapolis could use more options at cornerback.

Taking a flier on the 6-foot-1 Elam is one way to try to address that weakness. As a former first-rounder, Elam is owed $1.3 million over the remainder of 2024 and $2.6 million in 2025, all of which is guaranteed. That’s not a huge sum of money, but the Colts won’t want to pay that much unless they think he has a reasonable shot at becoming a regular member of the active roster. General manager Chris Ballard & Co. would need to decide on his fifth-year option after the season, so time is already ticking.

The Colts are considering a trade for Buffalo Bills cornerback Kaiir Elam, a former first-round pick who has struggled to find consistent playing time. With the trade deadline approaching, acquiring Elam could strengthen the Colts’ secondary, especially given their recent injury challenges.

While he has shown potential, his lack of targets raises questions about his fit. The Colts have the cap space to take on his rookie contract, making this a low-risk opportunity. Ultimately, if the Colts act quickly, they could secure a promising asset to bolster their defense.
