The Indianapolis Colts will have their final day of OTAs on Thursday before taking a short break. Once they return, the team will transition into mandatory minicamp, which will be held next Tuesday through Thursday, wrapping up spring workouts. After minicamp finishes, the Colts will have a month-long break before they begin training camp in late July.
One competition to monitor throughout the spring and summer is at quarterback. The front office signed Daniel Jones to compete with former 4th-overall pick Anthony Richardson. Richardson has had a rough start to his NFL career and needs to improve his throwing mechanics, accuracy, and ability to read defenses.
Indianapolis Colts’ 4th pick suffered an injury during OTAs

Anthony Richardson did not practice during OTAs this week after experiencing soreness in his throwing shoulder last week. For context, he missed the final 12 games of his rookie season because he suffered a Grade 3 AC joint sprain in that same shoulder, which required surgery. Team doctors recently checked on Richardson’s shoulder to determine the severity of the injury.

Indianapolis Colts’ key competitor out until training camp

During Thursday’s press conference, via Nick Shook of NFL.com, Shane Steichen provided an injury update on Anthony Richardson. Steichen said Richardson aggravated his AC joint but will not need a shoulder procedure as of now. As a result, he will miss mandatory minicamp with hopes of returning at some point during training camp.
“Doctors, trainers checked it out,” Steichen said, via Shook. “He’s got some aggravation in his AC joint. So we’re gonna sit him out this week. Obviously, he’ll sit out for minicamp. We’ll see when he comes back. Not gonna put a timetable for training camp on it, but when he does come back, we’ll ease him into throwing, and then we’ll go from there. The good thing is he’s not gonna need a procedure right now.”
Does this shift the QB competition?

The competition could shift in favor of Daniel Jones, with Anthony Richardson missing mandatory minicamp and possibly the start of training camp. With Richardson sidelined, Jones will continue to get an extended look with the first-team offense. If he performs well and builds a sizable lead, and the former 4th-overall pick returns to camp rusty, the Colts could have a new starting quarterback in Week 1.
