When the New York Giants were trading up from the 34th pick to the 25th pick with the Houston Texans in the 2025 NFL Draft, many were wondering if it was going to be for Shedeur Sanders from the Colorado Buffaloes. Instead, the Giants decided to trade up for quarterback Jaxson Dart from the Ole Miss Rebels.

Dart is one of three new additions to New York’s quarterback room this offseason. Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston are the other two additions to the team. Wilson and Winston are veterans in this league, and it will be interesting how all of them will perform in training camp.
New York Giants Insider Questions When Rookie Jaxson Dart Will Potentially Start For This Franchise

Many are wondering what the pecking order for the Giants quarterback situation will be like. Wilson is going to be the starter, Winston will be the backup quarterback, and Dart for now will be the third quarterback. Tommy DeVito is most likely going to get cut or wind up on the Giants practice squad. Dan Duggan covers the Giants for The Athletic and he does have an interesting question about this quarterback room.
“How long until Jaxson Dart takes over?”
This is an interesting question to ask now with a couple of weeks to go before training camp begins. Duggan said about the possibility of the Giants rookie quarterback potentially starting at some point in 2025,
“The Giants selected Jaxson Dart with the 25th pick in the draft in the hopes that he’ll be their quarterback of the future. How soon that future will begin is the question hanging over the organization. The Giants brought in Russell Wilson to serve two functions. First, Wilson gives a regime coming off a 3-14 season a chance to win games this season. Second, Wilson’s presence should afford Dart the necessary time to develop. How Wilson and the team fare and how Dart progresses will determine how long until the 22-year-old takes the reins.”
This is the correct answer given here by Duggan. If New York is winning games early in the 2025 season, there will be no need for the Giants to spring Dart into action. However, if they are off to a 1-5 start, there is a chance thar Dart could be sprang into action sooner rather than later. It is going to depend on how it all goes.
Things could also change with training camp and injuries occurring and stuff like that. With Wilson penciled in as the starter, is there a world where Winston and Dart compete for the backup job? That probably won’t be the case, but Dart will get a lot of reps during training camps and preseason games. In a perfect world, the Giants make the playoffs with Wilson as the starter to go along with Dart sitting and developing behind the scenes.
New York would love for him to wait until 2026 to be the full-time starter, but there is a chance that he may have to start games in 2025 for the Giants. Head coach Brian Daboll, general manager Joe Schoen, and owner John Mara are looking for more wins in 2025 because they had an abysmal 3-14 2024 season. As long as the Giants win games in 2025, they won’t need Dart to be a savior for them also.
