Green Bay Packers Release Young Wide Receiver After Rookie Mini Camp

The Green Bay Packers made the surprising decision to select two wide receivers in the 2025 NFL Draft. That is, while many expected the team to be interested in at least one pass catcher in the draft, few expected them to take two within the first three rounds, and virtually no one expected them to take one in the first.

But that is exactly what they did. With the 23rd overall pick, the Packers selected Matthew Golden from Texas. In the third round, they took Savion Williams from TCU.

Their selections, as well as Christian Watson‘s long recovery from an ACL tear that will likely keep him out for the start of the season, has many wondering exactly with Green Bay’s wide receiver room will look like in 2025.

On Monday afternoon, a couple of days after their rookie mini camp ended, the Packers announced that they had released wide receiver Tulu Griffin:

“The Green Bay Packers have released WR Tulu Griffin (TOO-lou). The transaction was announced Monday by General Manager Brian Gutekunst.”

Griffin had been signed by Green Bay to a futures deal back in January. After going undrafted in 2024, he spent time with the Las Vegas Raiders and Cleveland Browns last season, though he has yet to appear in an NFL game.

The Packers 90-man roster now has 89 players on it. Since they do not need to trim the roster to 53 until after training camp and preseason, it is likely that Green Bay found a tryout player that they liked during their brief rookie mini camp.

There were 11 players in attendance at that camp who were there on a tryout basis:

    • K Gavin Stewart
    • QB Taylor Elgersma
    • P Brendan Hall
    • WR Jack Studer
    • LB Xander Mueller
    • LB Luke Gunderson
    • LB Connor Shay
    • DL Van Fillinger
    • LS Gage King
    • WR Jaden Smith
    • WR Ali Jennings

It is possible that they will use this new roster spot on quarterback Taylor Elgersma, who won the Canadian college football equivalent of the Heisman Trophy last year.

That being said, he has a tryout with the Buffalo Bills later this week, too.
